First run in 1860 the race is the fastest of the week usually completed in under one minute. Having been a Group 2 race for 20 years, the race regained Group 1 status in 2008.

Favourites have a pretty bad record in the race with only 3 of the last 28 obliging with last year’s favourite Golden Pal finishing plum last at 15/8. Although the market can still be a good guide with 16 of the last 19 winners been priced at no bigger than 8/1.

A cracking renewal of the Kings Stand Stakes where we have a match up between the best sprinter over here in the mare Highfield Princess and one of the best from Australia in Coolangotta. It should be a decent battle between them with the likes of Dramatised also in with a shout. My preference though has to be Highfield Princess who was the best around last time winning three Group One’s before not getting the run of the race at the Breeders Cup.

Kings Stand Stakes History & Past Winners

As well as top level international trainers, the roll of winning honours include several noted for the handling of sprinters – Robert Cowell (Prohibit in 2011 and Goldream in 2015), Eddie Lynam (Sole Power in 2013 & 2014) and Clive Cox (Profitable in 2016).

Group 1 winning form is important for the overseas raiders but not so much for the British and Irish (four of the last ten were scoring for the first time at this level). Some key horse racing trends are that 8 of the last 10 winners were drawn eight or higher. 8 out the last 10 ran at least twice that season whilst 8 out of ten were a Group winner at 5F. 7 out of 10 had won that season.

Six of the last ten winners from Britain and Ireland had contested the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket or the Temple Stakes at Haydock (and frequently both) that season with five of them having won at least one of the contests. Significant races from further afield are the Prix du Gros-Chene (The Tatling in 2004, Equiano in 2008 and Prohibit in 2011 all placed before coming here).
