Wokingham Stakes Overview

First run in 1813, the Wokingham Stakes has become one of the more historic races in the Royal Ascot schedule. The race is named after the market town of Wokingham which is located several miles west of Ascot itself.

Pointers prevailed victorious in the first-ever edition of the race which was owned by the Duke of York. A horse by the name of Wokingham even won the race on two separate occasions in 1881 and 1882. The race used to be run as three separate races. It became a single race in 1874 and has been run that way ever since. The only exception was in 2020 when a Silver Wokingham Handicap was run due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seven jockeys, including Lester Piggott and Willie Carson, share the record for the most wins by a jockey in the race with 3 victories each. Four trainers (Joe Cannon, Richard Marsh, Charles Morton, and Paul Cole) have all experienced the most number of wins for a trainer in this race with 3 wins each.
