Chesham Stakes Overview
First run in 1919, the Chesham Stakes was initially named after the 3rd Baron Chesham who acted as the last Master of the Buckhounds from 1900 to 1901. It is a listed race that is eligible for two-year-old horses at Royal Ascot. The race is contested over a distance of 7 furlongs at Ascot Racecourse. The race traditionally opens proceedings on the final day of Ascot.
The race was originally run over a shorter distance of just 5 furlongs and had been introduced to replace the first leg of the Triennial Stakes. Over time, the race was extended to 6 furlongs before being extended to the current 7 furlongs in 1996.
An obscure restriction is in place for the Chesham Stakes. Only horses whose sires or dams have been victorious over a distance of more than 1 mile and 1 and a half furlongs are allowed to enter.
