There is not a wide choice of targets for stayers and almost every recent winner has come down the Sagaro/Henry II/Yorkshire Cup route in Britain or via the Vintage Crop/Saval Beg in Ireland. Ten of the last 16 winners have won at least one of those races en route (last year’s winner Kyprios won both Irish races). The previous Gold Cup is also a guide – ten horses have won the race more than once in the near half century since Sagaro, one of the all-time greats started his hat trick in 1975.
