Last year's hero GALOPIN DES CHAMPS put an underwhelming John Durkan effort behind him, when he was defeated for the second time by Fastorslow, when producing a breathtaking performance to hammer Gerri Colombe in the Savills Chase. His Cheltenham preparation continued to go to plan when he then got his revenge on Fastorslow to lift the Irish Gold Cup for a second time and he can follow in the hoofprints of Al Boum Photo, who won back-to-back Gold Cups for Willie Mullins in 2019/2020. Fastorslow has made great strides since being touched off by Corach Rambler in the Ultima here 12 months ago and is a serious player. Runner-up when attempting to defend his King George crown at Kempton over Christmas, and in this race last year, Bravemansgame looks the pick of the home team, although Gentlemansgame beat him in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby and he will need to take a big step forward on the form he has shown this season.

St James’s Place Hunters’ Chase Overview
The St James’s Place Hunters’ Chase is a chase for amateur riders open to horses aged five years and older. It is run over a distance of 3 miles 2 furlongs and 70 yards of the new course with twenty-two fences to be jumped. The winner is likely to take home prize money of around £24,000. The race is run on the final day of the Festival on the Friday as the fifth race, following the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
St James’s Place Hunters’ Chase Betting Trends and Statistics
Nine horses have been successful twice in the race since 1946 with three this century in Salsify (2012, 2013), On The Fringe (2015, 2016) and Pacha du Polder (2017, 2018).
The leading trainers with four a piece are Richard Barber with Rushing Wild (1992), Fantus (1995, 1997) and Earthmover (1998) and Paul Nicholls with Earthmover (2204), Sleeping Night (2005) and Pacha du Polder (2017, 2018).
The leading jockey is Colman Sweeney with three winners in Sleeping Night (2005) and Salsify (2012, 2013).
Qualification for entry into the race is based on a horse’s previous performances in certain types of race within a specific time period. To be eligible a horse must have finished first or second twice in hunter chase races, or have won two open point-to-pont races, or won one open point-to-point race and finished first or second in a hunter chase.
St James’s Place Hunters’ Chase History
Contested over the same course and distance as the Cheltenham Gold Cup (which precedes the race) it is sometimes referred to as the ‘amateurs Gold Cup’.
First run in 1904 it has had various different sponsors over the years including Sun Alliance, Christies, the Country Gentleman’s Association and since 2016 by its current sponsors St James Place plc.
Until 2020 the race was known as tn St James’s Place Foxhunters’ Chase with the word ‘fox’ being removed from the title before the 2021 running.

It is run on the final day of the Festival as the fifth race on the card following the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The 2024 renewal will be run on Friday March 15th.
