Kelso Races Overview

Kelso is an exclusively jumps racecourse, located just inside Scotland’s border with England. It is one of five Scottish racecourses and is frequently attended by raiders from the south because of the competitive prize money on offer.

This racecourse consists of two sharp, left-handed tracks – a chase track of 1 mile and 600 yards and a hurdle course of 1 mile 330 yards. The course has a punishing uphill run of two furlongs.

The Premier Kelso Hurdle is a Grade 2 hurdle open to horses aged four years and older run over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs in late February or early March. The winner is likely to win around £28,000.

The leading trainer over the past five years is Lucinda Russell. Fergal O’Brien and Warren Greatrex are two trainers well worth watching out for with a very decent win-to-run ratio here.

The leading jockey over the past five years is Brian Hughes. Two jockeys who have excellent strike rates here are Paddy Brennan and James Bowen.

Kelso Races History

The first recorded race meeting was held in 1734 at Caverton Edge. Races were also held at Blakelaw in the following years. The first race took part at the current racecourse on 16th April 1823 and was originally named “The Duke’s Course”. It was a flat-racing track until 1888 when it became a National Hunt-only racecourse.

Interestingly, on 19th May 1913, Arabella Scott, Edith Hudson, Agnes and Elizabeth Thomson were arrested after attempting to set fire to the racecourse. It is believed they carried out the act as part of the women’s suffrage movement at the time.
