Bristol City vs West Brom (3pm GMT, Championship)
The first pick for our Boxing Day accumulator focuses on one team that is enjoying the new manager bounce. It’s West Brom under the guidance of former Huddersfield gaffer Carlos Corberan. The Baggies won 5 league games on the bounce before a disappointing 1-0 loss away to Coventry in their most recent match.
Even after that defeat, it’s obvious that Corberan has had a massive impact on the Midlands team. They are now up to 16th in the table and the feelgood factor is back at the Hawthorns. Middlesbrough vs Wigan (3pm GMT, Championship)
One of the statistics that immediately stands out as our reasoning for picking Middlesbrough as a selection in this accumulator is the fact that they haven’t lost to Wigan in the last 12 meetings. It’s a run that stretches all the way back to 2007 and with the Latics struggling in the league this season you have to feel this is an uphill battle for them.
Michael Carrick is the new man at the helm at the Riverside Stadium and he’d led the team to an unbeaten run of 5 league games before their 3-1 loss to an impressive Burnley side in their last league outing. I expect them to bounce back here.
Sheffield United vs Coventry (3pm GMT, Championship)
An old saying goes that the very best teams still manage to find a way to win even when they’re not playing at their best. That’s certainly the case with Sheffield United. The Blades haven’t been playing particularly convincingly but they’ve still 6 of their last 7 league games and sit in 2nd place in the Championship table.
Paul Heckingbottom continues to do a cracking job with the Yorkshire club but he has struggled in his head-to-head meetings with Mark Robins including losing both league games against the Sky Blues in 2022. However, it’s been three visits to Bramall Lane without even scoring a goal for Coventry and you have to back United to beat anyone at home right now.
Ipswich vs Oxford (3pm GMT, League One)
It may well be a remarkable stat that 5 of the last 6 meetings between Ipswich and Oxford have ended in a draw and four of those have finished at 0-0. This is an Ipswich side that look ready-made for the Championship under Kieran McKenna at the helm leading the team to 2nd in the table.
The club have now lost just 1 of their last 8 league games but that did come in their last league game. That was a narrow 1-0 loss away to a tricky Wycombe team. The Tractor Boys are back on home turf here and given they’ve only lost 1 of their 11 home league games so far this season I think it’s worth backing them to win here.
Stockport vs Crewe (3pm GMT, League Two)
Frozen pitches have led to postponements of the last two league games for both Stockport and Crewe so the players have had some pre-Christmas time off to stay sharp. Only 3 points separate these two sides in the League Two table but Stockport have only lost 1 of their last 7 where as the Railwaymen have only won 2 of their previous 10 league games.
Defensive displays have been the highlight for County recently with 5 clean sheets in their last 7 league matches and given the fact that Alexandra haven’t scored more than 1 goal on their travels since the opening day of the season you have to suspect they could struggle to get anything in this one.
Arsenal vs West Ham (8pm GMT, Premier League)
Our accumulator picks end on a Premier League selection where we’re going to back the current league leaders and in-form side Arsenal. In years gone by, the Gunners might not be a team you immediately look at as part of an accumulator given their inconsistent results during this period but this season feels different.
It’s now 8 league games unbeaten for Mikel Arteta’s men and they face a West Ham side that are struggling for form with 4 losses from their last 5 league games. Their away form has never been great under David Moyes but this campaign they have only won 1 of their 7 away league games. It looks like a big ask for the Hammers to get something away to top of the table.
