Default The Cricket Thread

We've got a boxing thread and I've been thinking of starting a cricket thread for ages, particularly with the management and selection of the England team but I've not bothered until now . Final bit of patience has gone now though . Basically all things cricket in here, be it county creekit (lots of subjects are going to arise there in the coming months, especially after July 26 ), England or other international cricket and it saves the betting threads getting cluttered up with opinions/disagreements etc.

I'll start us off.

England announced a 30 man Champions Trophy preliminary squad today. Strangely enough the selectors have found 30 men better than David Sales but one I find even more strange is Darren Pattinson. 3 months ago the Grimsby based Australian born quicky was preparing for life in the Lincolnshire league. Then Notts signed him and now he's in the England prelim squad. It really is amazing how England select their players at the minute. I've seen Pattinson a couple of times this season and don't get me wrong he's a damn good bowler but how the hell is he in a 30 man squad when the likes of Lewis and Hoggard aren't. Bear in mind the tournament is in Pakistan where it could well swing.

The squad is Tim Ambrose (Warwickshire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Michael Carberry (Hampshire), Paul Collingwood (Durham), Alastair Cook (Essex), Andrew Flintoff (Lancashire), Simon Jones (Worcestershire), Ed Joyce (Middlesex), Rob Key (Kent), Sajid Mahmood (Lancashire), Dimitri Mascarenhas (Hampshire), Phil Mustard (Durham), Graham Onions (Durham), Monty Panesar (Northamptonshire), Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire), Darren Pattinson (Nottinghamshire), Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire), Liam Plunkett (Durham), Matt Prior (Sussex), Owais Shah (Middlesex), Ryan Sidebottom (Nottinghamshire), Andrew Strauss (Middlesex), Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire), James Tredwell (Kent), Chris Tremlett (Hampshire), Luke Wright (Sussex).

Don't even get me started on the wicket-keeper situation either .

Good choice Kev!

Glad Jones is involved. Don't expect him to feature, still has a lot of fitness to prove but I think he has an average of about 12 in the Championship, he has been brilliant and starting to show his class again, and this is in September.
Flintoff on form is a non pick. Can blame him, he's coming back from injury but has still failed to show any consistant form to be picked but I guess his experience will get him through in a time like this and with it so far ahead they are willing to include him. On form he is one of our best bowlers.

The test side is unchanged which I am not surprised about. We won, but there were question marks, some of the questions not answered. I still rate Bell but sometimes worry about his head especially against teams that will get at you mentally like the Ozzies and same with SA. Collingwood is a decent all rounder but I just think its a spot we could bring someone else in (like Hick )

I wouldn't have Saj Mahmood anywhere near a one day squad let alone an England one.

Has David Sales' time been and gone? Never quite kicked on after that huge double ton that announced him in the game. Thought James Hildreth may of made the shortlist, looks to have potential for England honours.

Great to see Simon Jones back in the reckoning, on his day he is unplayable, hopefully he can get a consistent injury free run going to get back to where he deserves to be and thats international cricket.

Still not convinced with Bopara, looks the kind of player who can excel in first class cricket but when it comes to the next level he'd found wanting. Still, young in age and he can turn it around.

glad Simon Jones is back, a key man in Englands Ashes' winning attack, saw highlights of him playing for Worcs, looks like he's carrying a bit of weight though.

Keep an eye out for Samit Patel if he gets a chance, good young batsman.

I'm glad someone mentioned the South Africans. We must be the only country in the world who brings tourists over and give them 2 warm up matches on batting paradises. All we needed to do was give them a 3rd at The Oval and they'd have had the sweep of best batting tracks in the country. It might only be a small thing in 2 months time but even so it's something they should think about IMO.

As for the one day side, that's a 30 man squad. There isn't 30 men better than Sajid Mahmood especially this season where he's bowling well. I've said in the cricket betting threads I'm a fan of his because he has pace. He's now got accuracy too and he'll be a threat if he came back into international cricket. I wonder what the selectors are thinking after the FP semi finals where 2 key players in those matches - Denly and Napier aren't in the 30 man squad. I'm not much of a Graham Napier fan but technically he's a better batsman than Luke Wright and probably a better bowler too. It must be who you know I guess .

Twenty20 tie off after player row

Rafiq (extreme left) was part of Yorkshire's win over Notts

Durham's Twenty20 quarter-final with Yorkshire was remarkably postponed after Tykes spinner Azeem Rafiq was alleged to be an ineligible player.
Spectators were gathered at the Riverside ready for the 1740 BST start when the news filtered through.
The England and Wales Cricket Board is investigating the matter and asked that the match be played at a later date.
Rafiq, 17, made his Yorkshire debut in their final group match against Notts, which a panel may order to be replayed.
Both teams were preparing for Monday's quarter-final, unaware of what was to follow until little more than an hour before the scheduled start.
606: DEBATE
Tell us what you think about the postponement

An ECB spokesman said: "ECB made it clear to both counties that in view of the alleged ineligibility of Azeem Rafiq, it was possible the panel could order the replay of any match or matches which could affect any quarter-final.
"The ECB are convening a meeting of the panel as a matter of urgency so that any relevant matches will be played before Twenty20 finals day at Southampton on 26 July."
The match in question, in which Rafiq, a former England Under-15 captain, took 0-18 from two overs in a victory against Notts at Trent Bridge, was played back on 27 June.
There had been speculation that the ECB were made aware of the registration problem regarding Rafiq within days of that fixture, but ECB chief executive David Collier insisted they had only discovered the facts on Monday morning.
Confusion reigns on the Yorkshire balcony at the Riverside

"I don't think we could have done any more than what we've been doing," he said.
"The worst would have been to just ignore it and act as though nothing had happened and let the game go ahead with the knowledge that the game may well have to be replayed.
"There was no registration of the player right from the outset - that was the key problem. There were several severe complications in this case, but the bottom line is the player was not registered to play in first-class cricket."
Had Notts won that game, they would have qualified ahead of Yorkshire.
Yorkshire coach Martyn Moxon admitted: "I have no idea what the outcome will be. It is a very complicated set of rules and regulations. He was on our list of players but as an academy player rather than a full-time contract player.
"He needed to have signed a paper saying he agreed to the regulations of the ECB but that piece of paper has been failed to be signed.
"Since then it would appear his status within the country appears to be in question.
"He has a permit allowing him to remain and work in this country indefinitely but his status in the first team brings him under ICC regulations and under those he does not have the relevant qualifications."

It's very complicated, very sad for the game and very sad for the competition

Durham coach Geoff Cook

Durham coach Geoff Cook was equally perplexed by the developments.
"Through no fault of our own, and without feeling too sorry for ourselves, we seem to be suffering all round," he said. "We have to wait until the process is sorted out between Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and, I think, Glamorgan, and then we will expect to play the winners here at the Riverside. "The whole thing is a very unsatisfactory situation., it's very complicated, very sad for the game and very sad for the competition. I feel very sorry for the lad involved."

Yet another cricket farce. I'm no fan of the ECB as most people know but it beggars belief how a major organisation can allow someone to captain our under 15's when he doesn't even have a British passport . What sort of twats do we have running the game in this country.

As a result of all that 10000 people left the Riverside without any sort of cricket at all, just at a time where getting people through the gates is a main priority. A complete joke all round really.

At least there will some cricket tonight and let's hope it makes up for the shambles of earlier on.

It really does beggar belief that the ECB are still stuck in the 1890-1940s style of running cricket.I hope that a lot of people sue the ECB for the money they've lost going to the game i.e food and refreshments, transport, time off work. How they can call it off that late is just a feckin joke

just get the feeling England, currently solid on 90/0 could take this SA bowling attack on, Ntini and Steyn have not lived up to the hype so far, they've bowled short, wide and rarely troubled the openers, think if Cook and Strauss upped it a bit SA might begin to struggle.

Weather's holding up aswell so far.

KP and Bell in, Bell scored a decent double century in the County Championship against Glos recently, so he's in reasonable form.

Just got in from work, delighted to see the score. Sounds like a good day was had by all bar the skipper. I'm sure KP enjoyed that one, looking forward to seeing the highlights on Sky Sports News at midnight UK time when we get it here.

Made up to see Belly going strong following an indifferent time of late, class always comes through in the end.

Vaughan was really unlucky, he just got an unplayable ball early on in his innings. To be fair, even if he'd been in all day and seeing it like a football he'd have struggled to have kept that out.

As for the day itself, a dream day for England. Shoved into bat and then notch up 300+ and lose only 3 wickets is the dream scenario. If we can knuckle down in the morning and push on for 500/550+ we can get stuck into them with plenty of runs in the bank.

I had a feeling they was coming over here with an overrated bowling attack and on today's evidence I think I was right. Long way to go though.

Away from the test arena Yorkshire were chucked out the twenty20 and replaced by Nottinghamshire. I'm sure that's not the last we've heard of that .

That bowling attack has been hyped up big time. Not seen much of Steyn since he burst onto the scene. 500+ and good weather should make a win for England. Havent seen the weather forecast so not sure if any play can be lost but it wouldnt shock me in England.

Steyn is a decent bowler mate. 121 wickets in his 25th test (I think). Forgot to mention earlier that Strauss copped a shocker from Daryl Harper (yep, I know big surprise. Not!). As regards the weather, showers over the next 2 days but nothing too big and decent weather Sunday and Monday. There will be time to make 550+ and bowl them out twice without having to bat again I think.

Bell gets a brilliant ton up, for once when it matters under pressure, timing the ball sweetly aswell, think the SA bowlers have struggled with the slope at Lords, alot of deliveries pitched on middle have gone down leg, easy money for someone like Bell/Pietersen to tuck it around the corner for runs.

Nice to see us battering the South Africans.
I haven't personally seen any hype about the SA attack (not in the Spanish media anyway ). Ntini is decent but they are a far cry from the SA attack of old
