The St Leger is the oldest of the five Classic Races and is run over the furthest distance. First run in 1776, it is often seen as the third and final leg of what is known as the colts and fillies “Triple Crown” in racing.
The race is held at Doncaster Racecourse and is run over a trip of one mile and six furlongs. It was originally run over two miles but this was changed in 1813 to the shorter trip. The race is exclusively for three-year old colts and fillies (geldings are not eligible for this race).
The St Leger has not always been run at Doncaster. It was relocated to Newmarket during the First and Second World Wars and in 1989, due to subsidence at the racetrack, the race was run at Ayr. It was run at York in 2006 due to further renovations at Doncaster Racecourse.

St Leger Tips
St Leger Tip: Lambourn (5/2 at bet365)
This looks to be a battle of the Ballydoyle superstars this season. The rapidly improving Scandinavia was doing all of his best work late on over two miles when landing the Goodwood Cup back in August. That was his third win from his last four starts and he was extremely impressive. That makes him the race favourite with horse racing bookies.
The biggest danger could well come from his stablemate, Lambourn, who has also won three of his first four starts this season. His wins included the Chester Vase, the Betfred Derby as well as the Irish Derby. He is the highest rated out of the pair and back on slower ground now, he may well just appreciate that a little bit more.
Whilst the booking of Tom Marquand is notable for Scandinavia, Sean Levey has been riding well all season and his mount may well take all the beating on Lambourn.
St Leger Runners To Watch
Carmers
A model of consistency who has progressed all year. He won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot over this trip when beating the re-opposing Furthur. No surprise to see him confirm that form, but it was only a Group 2 race and he could well have met his match here in the Ballydoyle pair of Scandinavia and Lambourn.
Furthur
A likeable grey by Waldgeist and has the assistance of Oisin Murphy in the saddle. He returned to winning ways in the Geffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury last time, but that race was at a much lower level than this. Up against proven Group 1 winners, he looks to have a massive task on his plate here.
Rahiebb
Has a lot of work to do to trouble the best of these. He was beaten out of sight at Goodwood last month when trailing in some seven lengths behind Merchant in the Gordon Stakes. His only win so far on his career so far has been on an artificial surface. He has not won from five attempts on grass.
Stay True
Sparingly campaigned compared to a few of these which means he comes here pretty much as a fresh horse. Mikael Barzalona has been booked to ride the son of Galileo in what is a third bite of the apple for Ballydoyle. He just tired over two miles last time, so this step back in distance could really suit him. His two stablemates just seem to have a bit more class and that could be all the difference.
Tarriance
He has won three of his last four starts and he is attempting to make the massive leap from winning handicaps into being a top level Group 1 performer. There is a gulf of difference and with the step up in trip an unknown, he may well prove to be a little out of his depth.
St Leger Betting Trends
- Aidan O’Brien has a phenomenal record in this race having won it four times since 2017. He teams up with the same jockey that won that won this race for him last year and gives him a premium mount in Lambourn.
- Four favourites have won this race in the last ten years.
- Horses that were beaten more than five lengths last time out have not won this race in the last twenty years.
- Sean Levey, Tom Marquand and Mikael Barzalona have all won this race before and all ride for Aiden O’Brien in this race.
