The William Hill Aintree Hurdle is run on the opening day of the three-day Aintree Grand National meeting. It is run over two and a half miles. Some classy hurdlers have won this in the past, including Constitution Hill, Epatante, and Annie Power. The Grade 1 race usually takes a little over five minutes to run on a turning flat track.

Barton Snow and Its On The Line clash again after their epic encounter at the Cheltenham Festival where Joe O'Shea's charge came out on top, despite making a complete mess of the final fence. There has to be a slight concern whether the race has taken enough out of him and it may well be that the runner-up, who won this in 2024, is able to reverse the form. That said, the pair come up against a fresh rival in the shape of UNEXPECTED PARTY, who seems to have had this as a long-term aim since being switched to the hunter chase sphere. He has been a comfortable winner at Taunton and Haydock and the strong-travelling grey should be ideally suited to the demands of these fences. Others to consider include Golden Son, who is likely to benefit from dropping back in trip after finishing fourth at Cheltenham, Lets Go Champ and Java Point.

Aintree Hurdle Overview

The William Hill Aintree Hurdle, as its name suggests, is run at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. It is usually the fourth race on the opening day of the three-day Aintree festival. The Grade 1 race is run over two-and-a-half miles on what is a flat turning track.

The field jumps eleven hurdles in total and the prize money on offer is usually in and around £140,000 to the winner. The race is for those horses aged four and older.

Horses that win this race tend to be established Grade 1 performers. Before winning this last year, Impaire Et Passe was a fine third to State Man at the Dublin Racing Festival, and in the years before that, Constitution Hill romped home in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2023 prior to winning this. A small but select field is likely to be competing here, but it is always a fascinating race for the betting public.
