Cartmel Racecourse, nestled in the village of Cartmel, Cumbria, is a quaint National Hunt (jump racing) only venue. Despite its small size, it hosts nine days of jump racing each summer, drawing large audiences.
The course features a left-handed loop slightly over a mile long, with a unique finishing straight that cuts across the circuit. In fact, the design divides the area into two public enclosures at the centre.

The Cumbria Crystal Cup is a handicap hurdle run over a distance of 2 miles 6 furlongs and 31 yards in July. The winner is likely to win around £19,000.
The Cartmel Cup is a handicap hurdle run over a distance of 2 miles 1 furlong and 46 yards in August. The winner is likely to receive around £11,000.
The leading trainer over the past five years is local handler James Moffatt whose horses always run well here. Numerically Donald McCain also does well whilst the likes of Tim Vaughan, Charlie Longsdon and Justin Landy have excellent win-to-run ratios with a small number of runners.
Brian Hughes has ridden the most winners at the track over the past five years with Charlotte Jones also riding many winners, mainly for James Moffatt.
Cartmel was the site of the Gay Future ‘coup’ in 1974. It was one of the most notorious scandals in horse racing that involved switching horses before a race and relying on the lack of communication at the course.
