Kauto The King is a three-time course and distance winner at Wincanton and despite being one of the oldest horses in this field, has maintained some good form this year. Genuine good ground is what he operates best on and that certainly looks to be on offer here. The nine-year-old ran his best race here in quite some time last time out over an inadequate two miles and could well be about to strike given that the handicapper has given him a genuine chance by dropping him five pounds. Harry Kimber has partnered him to victory before and is in good form himself. The combination command respect now back together and no surprise to see them in the winners’ enclosure given the form of their rivals.
2-52 @ Gowran Park SLANE HILL (5/1)
Slane Hill comes here on good terms with himself and was last seen finishing third to Bluebell Diva over this course and distance last month. Still extremely lightly raced, Michael O’Sulivan is able to claim five pounds on the Barry Connell runner. There is still any amount of improvement to come from the six-year-old son of Shantou. The form of his maiden win at Naas is starting to work out extremely well with the likes of Yeah Man, Langdale Lane and El Poppochapo all coming out to frank the form subsequently. With the experience he gained around here last day likely to be an asset, Slane Hill looks like the pick of the field.
3-50 @ Haydock Park ENZO D’AIRY (5/1)
Enzo D’Airy has had a tough time of it in recent months but defiantly managed to win following a nearly two-year absence at Chepstow back in December. Raised in grade over the same course and distance next time out Lucy Turner was all at sea on board the nine-year-old. A better effort came at Lingfield when again his sights were lowered and Shane Quinlan was back in the saddle.
This is the right level for the Venetia Williams-trained runner and with Charlie Deutsch booked to ride today, the pair look destined to go close. Although remaining four pounds higher than his last winning mark, his good form can counteract that. Venetia Williams does well with her runners at this track and any further rain would certainly assist Enzo D’Airy.
4-25 @ Haydock Park SUPREME GIFT (13/2)
Supreme Gift is a horse with a lot of potential and has a winning habit on ground with a bit of give in it. He is a three-time winning hurdler and has gone in at Uttoxeter, Huntingdon and Catterick over two-and-a-half mile trips. This is a significant step up in distance for the six-year-old but with the trainer having won this with Hillcrest last year, he knows exactly what type of horse it takes to do so and his decision is respected.
The booking of Charlie Deutsch for Supreme Gift is eye-catching as he has won on his last two rides for Henry Daly including on this boy. The small yard are in great form having won with three of their last nine runners and no surprise to see a bold attempt to retain this prize.
