In 2019, casino specialists mr.play entered the sports betting scene and have since carved out a unique space for themselves, particularly appealing to niche and Esports bettors.

While some drawbacks exist, mr.play has enough plus points elsewhere to appeal to punters looking for market depth and value. In this mr.play review, I’m going to provide an in-depth analysis of their sports betting platform and how they compare to the best sports betting sites in the UK.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Over 30 sports available to bet on
  • Competitive football odds
  • Excellent coverage of niche sports
  • Strong Esports coverage
Cons
  • Limited promotions
  • Underwhelming welcome offer
  • No live streaming outside of Esports

Key Features

As you can see, mr.play offers standard betting features like bet builders, cash out, a mobile app, and in-play stats to help bettors make informed decisions, but they let themselves down with a lack of live streaming.

First Impression

I found mr.play’s layout clean, well-organised, and easy to navigate. Its crisp blue and white colour scheme made for a pleasant user experience, and I preferred it to the more cluttered interfaces seen at competitors like William Hill and Betfair.

I was impressed by the depth of markets on offer, with over 150 options for each of the Premier League fixtures I scanned. There is also an obvious lean in the direction of Esports with mr.play, with links to 13+ games – Warcraft 3, NBA2K, Call of Duty and Counter Strike – sitting alongside mainstream sports in the primary menu.

The “Bet £10 Get £15” welcome offer is a little underwhelming and sets a modest tone when it comes to promotions. Punters looking for new bookies with a stronger offer might be better off with alternatives like Betway or Sky Bet.

Still, if you’re after consistent value, mr.play delivers. While giving their prices a rigorous run through, I found plenty of reasons for enthusiasm with mr.play’s odds consistently held up well against their competitors.

Sports Betting Markets

mr.play’s sportsbook covers both mainstream and niche sports with impressive depth, but it’s their attention to the latter that really sets them apart.

I was able to browse markets for sub-culture sports from beach soccer and waterpolo to floorball and Pesapallo with mr.play, so they score high for variety, especially compared to competitors like bet365 and Ladbrokes.

Mr.play is also one of the best Esports betting sites in the UK that I’ve experienced, with coverage comprehensive in that direction.

Betting Odds

mr.play’s betting margins fall into the “middle of the road” category, averaging around 6.5%. This places them just behind the leading alternatives such as NetBet (5.0%), Betfred (5.2%), and Coral (5.8%).

However, in the Premier League markets, I found that mr.play regularly supplied some of the best prices, especially for primary markets like match result, over 2.5 goals etc.

Punters can also take advantage of PlayBoosts to enhance acca prices by up to 77% while price boosts for bigger events can also make odds more attractive.

Horse racing prices weren’t quite as sharp, with mr.play behind leading names like bet365 and 888 Sport for most UK and Irish races. The absence of a best odds guaranteed feature with mr.play probably has an effect there.

That said, mr.play excels in pricing and coverage for niche sports and Esports. They regularly provide odds for events that other bookmakers simply don’t cover at all.

In-Play Betting

5 /5
Screenshot of the mr.play desktop interface displaying the in-play betting section for a football match between FC Krumovgrad and Slavia Sofia. The match tracker shows events such as goals, cards, and substitutions on a timeline. Betting markets include full-time result, over/under goals, both teams to score, and team-specific totals. A sidebar on the right features upcoming horse races, with odds and runners listed. The interface also includes navigation for casino, live casino, promotions, and sports at the top.

All of mr.play’s live betting events can be accessed via the “In-Play” tab at the top of the main sportsbook menu. The interface is clean though feels somewhat basic when compared to the more dynamic, visually rich platforms like bet365, 10bet and Virgin Bet.

The variety of in-play markets is solid enough, while the cash out function keeps you in control.  However, the lack of live streaming capabilities beyond Esports is a significant drawback for bettors who prefer following the action in real-time. The match tracker compensates to a degree, but not enough in my opinion.

Live betting sites like Betway and bet365, who stream thousands of live sporting events each year, strike a much better balance between tracker graphics and live streaming.

Betting Features

5 /5

mr.play keeps its betting features fairly straightforward, which may appeal to some users but can feel a little too minimal when compared to the more creative and engaging extras offered by rival bookmakers.

You’ll find standard tools such as bet builders, combo bets, and market specials. However, there’s no custom request-a-bet feature like William Hill’s #YourOdds or Betfred’s #PickYourPunt.

Similarly, punters used to features like Ladbrokes Racecard Builder and Pre-Built bets or Boylesports’ Acca Rewards and 2 Up early payouts are likely to feel shortchanged with mr.play.

Mobile Betting/App

mr.play Mobile Site (left) and Mobile App (right)

The first thing to note here is that mr.play has separate apps for its sportsbook and casino, though both are currently available on Android only.

The mr.play sportsbook app has a modest rating of 3.7 on the Play Store and relatively few downloads (5k+) when compared to some of the best betting apps like bet365 (5m+), SkyBet (1m+) and Paddy Power (1m+).

After testing the app myself, it didn’t take long for me to establish why it hasn’t been a popular release. Loading times were sluggish and it wasn’t as responsive as I’d like, so there is definite room for improvement.

In contrast, the mobile version of the mr.play website is fully responsive and offers a much better mobile betting experience than the app, with better reliable functionality and speed.

Welcome Bonus & Promotions

5 /5

Mr.play’s welcome offer gives new signups £15 in free bets once they place a qualifying bet of £10 at minimum odds of 1/1 (2.00).

Admittedly, they didn’t bowl me over with their generosity – you can bag £30 in free bets for your tenner with bet365 and Boylesports or £50 with BetFred for instance – but what the offer lacks in incentive, it makes up for with its simplicity.

There are no catches or stiff wagering requirements in the small print. Everything is transparent and straightforward. This is a refreshing change from the more lucrative offers elsewhere that come heavily wrapped in complicated T&Cs.

Once you’re through the doors, promotions are pretty limited with mr.play. As you’ll see in the table below, existing customers don’t exactly have a plethora of free bets, betting offers or bonuses to harness.

Offer Details
Loyalty Points Earn points while you play to unlock benefits. Seems to be mostly casino-related, unfortunately.
PlayBoosts Enhance your acca odds by up to 77%. Percentage increase climbs with each leg you add to your selection.
Price Boosts Enhanced odds offers on selected matches and events.
Other Promotions Mr.play launches promotions and specials to coincide with major sporting events like the European Championships

Payment Methods

5 /5

Punters have several ways to make deposits with mr.play including all the usuals like visa/debit card, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and bank transfer. I funded my own account using both debit card and PayPal for this review and the process was smooth each time.

The minimum deposit is £10, which is higher than £5 deposit betting sites like bet365, BetVictor, and Virgin Bet. That might be an area that requires a rethink.

Withdrawal times range from near instant to up to six business days depending on your preferred method. This is nothing out of the ordinary here and processing times are similar elsewhere.

Method Fee Process Time Min. Deposit Max. Withdrawal
Apple Pay Free Instant £10 0-6 Business Days
Visa Free Instant £10 0-6 Business Days
PayPal Free Instant £10 0-2 Business Days
Trustly Free Instant £10 0-4 Business Days
MuchBetter Free Instant £10 0-2 Business Days

Customer Support

3.5 /5

A strong customer service should be a priority for any bookmaker, but mr.play could definitely step things up here.

They offer a handy help section with an extensive FAQ to answer common issues. However, beyond that, assistance is limited.

A dedicated email channel is available and while mr.play claim to offer 24/7 customer support, I wasn’t overly impressed with their response times.

The addition of a live chat function or customer service phone line would be welcome here.

Security, Fairness & Player Safety

mr.play claim that security is “central to their operations” and to their credit, they have robust systems in place to ensure punters can bet in a safe and secure environment.

All card transactions on the site are processed by Aspire Global International Ltd and are protected by 128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption and firewall technology.

In the UK, mr.play operates under AG Communications Limited’s licence from the UK Gambling Commission. This means they are held to the highest standards of player protection and fairness enforced by the Commission.

As a result, UK bettors can have peace of mind knowing that mr.play provides a secure and trustworthy environment in which to enjoy their betting experience.

Punters Lounge Verdict:
mr.play

Punters looking for a streamlined experience combined with decent value will enjoy mr.play’s platform. However, those looking for a more feature-rich experience will probably find they are better served elsewhere.

The lack of promotions for existing customers, stripped-back live-betting options and lack of live streaming will be significant drawbacks for punters used to more complete betting services delivered by the industry’s bigger names.

However, niche sports and Esports punters are expertly catered for and mr.play comes equipped with more odds and markets for non-mainstream sports than the majority of their competitors.

Mr.play is guaranteed to impress anyone betting looking for value and depth in those directions. You can claim a £15 free bet by signing up with mr.play today.
