Brighton Racecourse, a flat racing only track, is located just a mile northeast of Brighton’s centre in Sussex and is part of the Arena Racing Company portfolio. Its location near the coast, elevated at 400 feet above sea level, offers scenic vistas.
The track is left-handed, uniquely shaping into a horseshoe, with a run-in of 3 ½ furlongs. A highlight of Brighton Racecourse’s calendar is the three-day festival, a celebrated event that takes place annually in early August.
Location: Freshfield Road, Brighton, East Sussex, BN2 9XJ
The Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy Handicap is a flat race run over a mile for horses aged three years and upwards run in August. The winner is likely to win around £12,000.
The racing at Brighton is of low grade but plentiful with around 22 fixtures due each season.
The leading trainer over the past five years is Tony Carroll with twice as many winners as any other trainer. Newmarket handlers William Haggas and James Fanshawe have a very high win-to-run ratio at the seaside track and anything they run has to be considered.
There is no stand-out jockey over the past five years with Tom Marquand, David Probert and Hollie Doyle all high in the winning most jockeys table. Clifford Lee has a very good strike rate with his rare rides and is one to note.
The horse with the most wins at a track which does favour course specialists is Pour La Victoire who achieved his eleventh victory at the course in 2021 at the age of 11 and duly had the winners’ suite at the track named after him. Trainer Tony Carroll retired him after that famous win.
Sheikh Mohammed had his first British victory at the track with Hatta, trained by John Dunlop in June 1977.
