1-18 Wetherby – Haafapiece (6/1)
Haafapiece looks potentially well treated on the best of his old form. The nine-year-old gelding made his seasonal reappearance at Market Rasen last month and probably found his stamina a bit stretched following a 185-day absence. With that run under his belt, he is taken to improve from it the previous course and distance winner looks likely to go well with apprentice Jamie Brace able to claim a further ten pounds from the son of Jeremy. He is another that likes to have a little rain in the ground and is capable of going well.
1-30 Naas – Jiving Jerry (12/1)
Jiving Jerry ran well despite a 265-day layoff in a major handicap hurdle at the Galway Festival back in July. The two-mile trip that day was most likely far too short and now that he is stepped in trip once more, he can be seen in a much better light. Jockey Cathal Landers knows Jiving Jerry well having won on him over a similar trip last season. The son of Jeremy loves to get his toe in so the more rain that falls, the more his chances are increased. Despite being seven pounds higher than his last win, he sneaks in here at the foot of the handicap and looks to have a decent chance.
1-37 Uttoxeter – Begin The Luck (7/1)
Begin The Luck makes a quick reappearance having finished second at Exeter behind the Kim Bailey trained Gerard Mentor. That certainly seemed to be an indication that he was on his way back into form having improved steadily from his seasonal reappearance at Newcastle back in September. Thomas Doggrell is once again on board and the promising young claimer can take seven pounds from his partners’ back. On what is only his fourth start since joining Brian Barr from the yard of Caroline Bailey, it would be no surprise to see the six-year-old go extremely close.
1-53 Wetherby – Karl Phillipe (5/1)
Karl Phillipe has gone well fresh in each of the last three seasons for Fergal O’Brien. He hasn’t been seen on a racecourse since just being touched off by Yggdrasil at Uttoxeter back in March. With another summer behind him, he is likely to be raring to go yet again and now racing off a career high mark, his trainer has called upon the services of Jack Hogan to help alleviate some of that extra weight that his charge has to carry. The pair look sure to go well on what will be their first outing together.
