Wales Open Betting: Marcel Siem can take advantage of poor field to pick up Wales Open at Celtic Manor
One of the better events on the European Tour is played this week as the tour stays in the UK for the Wales Open at the famous Celtic Manor Resort just outside Newport in Wales. This is a venue which is famous for European Golf after their Ryder Cup team won here in 2010 and it is a venue Alexander Noren enjoys too having won here last year. He is 18/1 with Bet365 to repeat that success this year.
Celtic Manor is a really picturesque course and one in which water is in play on a lot of the holes. It is quite an open course so straight hitting isn’t as crucial as it could be on other courses but the straighter you hit it the easier the greens are to find. As a par 71 measuring 7,378 yards you’d have to say it is a fairly long course but set in the valleys some of it is downhill so doesn’t play that long.
Despite this being a very good tournament in an excellent venue a relatively weak field has been assembled which is a shame for those involved in the tournament. The betting market is headed by Italian Francesco Molinari at 12/1 while Paul Lawrie is next at 14/1. After Alexander Noren comes George Coetzee and local hope Jamie Donaldson but the market highlights the weak field.
One man I like this week is Marcel Siem. The German has been going well in 2012 and finished well at Wentworth last week and only a poor third round cost him a chance of a really big pay day on a tough course. He was 7th in the end though which was his third top 10 finish of the year. One of his others came in a strong field in Dubai so he’s been playing well. Siem has a couple of top 10’s around Celtic Manor and after a few average weeks he’s finished 12th and 7th in his last two tournaments and could just be running into the form capable of winning in a weak field this week.
