Wade vs Thornton Betting: Robert Thornton's consistent heavy scoring could see him edge opener in Nottingham

The Capital FM Arena in Nottingham is the venue for the Premier League darts this week and two of the tournament’s high fliers open proceedings on Thursday night as James Wade takes on Robert Thornton. Before a dart was thrown in this tournament these two were expected to be struggling to avoid relegation but both are actually looking for semi final places after strong starts. Wade goes into this match as an 11/8 favourite with Skybet.

James Wade has steadily improved week on week in this Premier League and his draw with Phil Taylor last week will have given him a lot of confidence for the remainder of the competition. He averaged over 100 for the second week in a row and a repeat of that will make him hard to beat here. Wade is scoring a lot better than we are used to seeing but he’ll need to score well here.

Robert Thornton has been a revelation in the Premier League so far. He is unbeaten in the tournament and his 109.33 average in beating Gary Anderson last week was the best average recorded in the tournament so far. Thornton is scoring brilliantly at the minute but perhaps the most surprising aspect of his game has been his finishing which has been quite crisp, particularly on double top which he has hit as relentlessly as Wade, a compliment in itself.

I think this will be a close match and I wouldn’t be surprised whatever the result is. Surprisingly it is the first time they have played in two years but I’ve just a feeling Robert Thornton might win this. His more consistent scoring could be the major factor in the game because he isn’t missing a lot of doubles. Wade has been a lot better on his scoring but he can still have loose throws and legs so I’ll take Thornton to edge a close one.
