US Open Betting: American duo of Jason Dufner and Jim Furyk have the credentials to overcome Olympic Club course
The 112th US Open begins on Thursday and with the tournament being held in San Francisco it means a late night or four for those of us in the UK who don’t want to miss a minute of the action. The second major of the year is always notorious for being a tough test for all golfers with quite often level par or even over par winning. Rory McIlroy defends his title this week and is 20/1 with William Hill to defend successfully.
The Lake Course at the Olympia Club in San Francisco is our course this week. As with all US Open courses it is a par 70 this week but it isn’t terribly long by USGA standards and just over 7,100 yards. It does contain the longest hole in US Open history in the 670 yard par 5 16th. However it does have a couple of par four’s which are less than 350 yards so it’s a well balanced course. Hitting fairways will be essential here to attack the miniature sized greens which are a feature of this golf course.
Although Rory McIlroy is the defending champion it is the three time winner Tiger Woods who is the favourite to regain the title. He is currently a 10/1 shot. Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson are the other players in the field who are less than 25/1. For a winner of the US Open I always use this as a profile guide – I want a straight driver, a good, reliable ball striker and most importantly of all a fantastic putter. You don’t win this tournament if you can’t putt.
One man who I really like the look of this week is Jason Dufner. The USPGA runner-up is in exceptional form right now. In his last four starts he has won twice and should’ve won another which he ended up second in. He has the game to go very well this week and his stats this season highlight that. He’s 11th on the PGA Tour on fairways hit, 6th in GIR’s and 9th in bogey avoidance so he has value in his golf ball and his scrambling, which will be needed at some point this week, is very good. I think he ticks every box to go very close this weekend.
Another man who I like is the former winner of this tournament Jim Furyk. Whenever US Open’s come along it can be folly to ignore the wonky swinged one because despite his different swing he has all the credentials of a US Open winner. He’s as straight as they come, as proven by the fact he is 2nd in fairways hit this year. Hitting greens is no problem and he is a good putter under pressure and is always there or thereabouts. He has seven top 25’s in his last eight tournaments so his consistency is back. He was second at the Transitions and fourth at Colonial so he’s in good form and should also go well.
