Shell Houston Open Betting: Stuart Appleby looks a big price in the Thursday three-balls
The groupings for the opening round of the Shell Houston Open have been drawn and the marquee group would appear to be the Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim group. That sees the two highest world ranked players in the field and the defending champion taking each other on. They are likely to get most of the afternoon galleries with the main match in the morning session being the Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan and Fred Couples group.
I’m going to concentrate on another group in terms of an opening day punt. The group I’m interested in is the afternoon tee off featuring Francesco Molinari, YE Yang and Stuart Appleby. Francesco Molinari played some superb golf in the WGC Cadillac a few weeks ago and was unlucky not to win the event but this will be the first time he’s played the Shell Houston Open and Redstone and that doesn’t fill me with confidence. The course and in particular the greens do take a bit of getting used to and that could be an issue.
YE Yang has played here before but he’s rarely threatened the scorers and his name hasn’t needed to be etched on the leaderboard very often. He isn’t the type of player you would associate with going well here with the fast greens and the scrambling necessity of the game a must around here. So that leaves us with Appleby.
Stuart Appleby has finished 1st and 2nd around this course in this tournament in 2006 and 2007 so it’s clearly a place he has a good feel around. He’s been in consistent form on Tour this year and has had 4 top 15 finishes this season so he’s in good touch and with his record on the course and his form recently I think he can win this three ball on Thursday.
