Purdy vs Rivera Betting: Lee Purdy can take advantage of late opponent change at Wembley
Matchroom Sport have another action packed card on Sky Sports on Saturday night and the chief support fight on the bill sees Lee Purdy fighting for the IBF International welterweight title against the experienced Mexican Cosme Rivera at the Wembley Arena. Purdy was due to be fighting Carson Jones in this fight but Jones pulled out earlier in the week so the Mexican has stepped in to replace him at short notice.
Lee Purdy goes into this fight as the 2/7 favourite with BetVictor and I’m sure he’ll just be pleased to have a half decent opponent after a hard training camp. Nevertheless a win here will move him up the IBF rankings and closer to a world title shot. Purdy has 19 wins from his 23 fights and has stopped 12 of his victims but it is only really in recent fights where he has begun to come into his own. He’ll hope that’s the case here.
Cosme Rivera is getting no younger at 36 and he has lost 15 of his 54 fights including last time out when he was beaten by a split decision. Over the course of his career he’s been in with some classy operators such as Zab Judah and Andre Berto and he doesn’t shirk a fight. He’s only been stopped in two of those 15 defeats but having taken the fight at short notice I’d expect him to be on the back foot for large parts of this one.
It is never easy taking a fight at short notice and it remains to be seen what shape Rivera is in. He’s getting no younger which won’t help his cause. Lee Purdy is really starting to blossom now and he’s picking up the stoppage wins for fun at the minute and I think there’s value in backing him to win this by stoppage. If Rivera is a bit out of shape then the longer the fight goes and the more pressure Purdy applies, the Englishman could force a late stoppage.
Back L.Purdy to beat C.Rivera by stoppage for a 3/10 stake at 4.00 with Bet365
