PDC World Championship Betting Guide
Every Christmas the PDC hold their world championship from the Alexandra Palace in London. The tournament, now comfortably the biggest in darts, usually sees the first round played before Christmas and then a break for the festive period before returning after Christmas for the conclusion. The tournament is broadcasted in full on Sky which has caused the profile of this event to become bigger and bigger.
This tournament was played for the first time in 1994 after the top 16 players in the world broke away from the BDO system due to lack of TV exposure and prize money, to form what is now known as the Professional Darts Corporation. Dennis Priestley won this tournament in that year, one of only five years that Phil Taylor hasn’t won this event.
The current format sees the top 32 players in the world qualify automatically with the top 16 players on the Players Championship Order of Merit who aren’t automatically qualified also taking their place in the tournament. A series of international qualifying tournaments and rankings provide the rest of the players to make up the challengers for the title.
With Sky Sports covering the event and Ladbrokes sponsoring it, betting on this tournament is extremely popular. Bookmakers offer wide ranges of markets on the tournament both for match betting and tournament outright betting. As well as those options, most bookmakers offer in play markets which appeals to punters as the many twists and turns in a match can generate plenty of in play betting opportunities.
After taking the title two years running, Adrian Lewis had to hand back the trophy after Phil Tayor beat Michael Van Gerwen in the 2013 final.
