Cricket World Cup betting: Ireland can shock hosts in Friday's late match
Ireland are the last team to enter the Cricket World Cup but they finally get to make their bow in the event on Friday when they take on the co-hosts Bangladesh in Group B. Like the opening game of the tournament this match will take place at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka and as we saw on Saturday a vociferous home crowd will be following the Bangladesh side.
This wicket played really well on Saturday and I expect it to do the same here. It may well turn as the night goes on but that will be tempered to a bit with the dew which may well fall. Bangladesh may well look to change their bowling attack around after the seamers went around the park. Ireland appear to be at full strength and have a bowling attack which can be relied on for a wicket like this. I like the look of their batting line up too.
I think this could be a bit closer than the odds suggest. Ireland are no mugs and they are here to cause a bit of a stir. For perhaps the first time in World Cup history Bangladesh are under serious pressure here not only from an expectant home crowd but also many pundits who fancy them to qualify. I’m not one of those people though as I think their bowling attack is too samey and can be read too easily.
Ireland have beaten Bangladesh in 3 of the 7 meetings they’ve had against them in international cricket and perhaps more importantly have beaten them in both meetings they’ve had in global events. These conditions should suit Bangladesh a lot more but most of Ireland’s batsmen will have played Bangladesh’s main threat with the ball – Shakib – in county cricket last season and if he doesn’t have a good game Ireland will be in with every chance. The likes of Porterfield, Joyce and O’Brien are all good one day batsmen and the Irish are definitely in with a shout of an upset here.
