2019 Trull House Stud Mares Novice Hurdle Preview & Tips - 4.50pm Cheltenham
2019 PREVIEW DUE by MARCH 5th-10th
The newest race at the Festival and both winners so far have one thing in common - trained by Willie Mullins, owned by Rich Ricci and ridden by Ruby Walsh.
This year the Mullins bandwagon will be steered by Laurina, another ex-French mare sourced for races such as this. The 5yo was nothing special before moving to Ireland but it didn’t take long for the maestro to work his magic for her new owner Jared Sullivan.
She made her debut at Tramore in December and won by an emphatic 15 lengths. A couple of novicey mistakes were noted but on the whole looked the part. Next time out she stepped up in class and won the Grade 3 Solerina Mares Hurdle at Fairyhouse. Again it wasn’t a foot perfect round of jumping but she came home 11 lengths clear of her rivals and was very impressive for a horse with little experience.
At this stage she is definitely the number one contender from the Mullins yard but a fly in the ointment could by the Ricci owned Salsaretta who has yet to see a racecourse wince coming over from France in the autumn.
The 5yo was last seen last September where she finished with a rattle but just failed to get up in a Listed contest at Auteuil. They all seem to improve when they start racing over here so we can expect big things from this promising mare.
A third runner from the stable worth looking at is Cut The Mustard owned by Jared Sullivan. After two average runs where she was a beaten favourite on both occasions she finally came good at Punchestown last time out. If she can build on that she would have to be considered.
The English challenge is led by Maria’s Benefit trained in Buckinghamshire by Stuart Edmunds. The yard has really come into prominence this season and are showing they can do the job if they have the ammunition. This 6yo has been a revelation this season and has won five races including a Grade 2 contest at Doncaster last time.
That victory more or less booked her ticket to Cheltenham and as long as the ground doesn’t get too soft she will not let her supporters down.
Nicky Henderson has two mares entered that are owned by JP McManus, the best of those is probably Countister who has won two of her three races since coming over from France.
Her last victory at Sandown may well have been a tad fortunate as Ainchea came down at the last when two lengths clear. She will obviously need to improve to win this but the trainer knows how to get one ready for the Festival.
The other green and gold entry is Dame De Compagnie. She won on her debut at Uttoxeter and then was pitched in to a Grade 3 here at Cheltenham. Despite going off a short priced favourite she finished last of five and now has questions to answer.
Cap Soleil is highly regarded by trainer Fergal O’Brien and was unbeaten in three bumpers. She then opened her account over hurdles by beating Countister by 7 lengths and lofty plans were being drawn up. Next time out she was surprisingly beaten at Newbury by Dame Rose and that provided more questions than answers.
Things got back on track at Haydock where she really battled well to win in a tight finish from Angels Antics in bad ground. She has been given time to get over that and could come back a better horse.
Trainer Martin Keighley is never afraid to have a go at the big boys and he has a nice mare in Spice Girl. She won three bumper races which is a feat in itself and has now won two of her three starts over hurdles, Last time she beat The Vocalist at Towcester and looks a real genuine type who loves her racing, she could go well at a big price.
