Mares Chase Tips - 4:15pm Cheltenham

As this is the inaugural running of the Mares’ Chase there are no statistics available to help us make an informed decision on who to side with. This race will be contested over the same course and distance as the Ryanair Chase and the main reason for its inclusion on Gold Cup Day is that it will hopefully encourage classier mares to be sent chasing in the oncoming years.

Of course we all know that Willie Mullins absolutely farms this type of race so is there any point in taking him on? He has saddled all five winners of the Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (now Daylesford Mares’) as well as nine of the thirteen winners of the David Nicholson (now Close Brothers) Mares’ Hurdle. He saddles the leading pair in the betting but can they make an impact here where it will matter the most?

Elimay comes here in good heart having won a listed race at Naas last month. She saw off the likely re-opposing Shattered Love by a little over five lengths. She has been sparingly campaigned with this as her most likely main target for the year. She has run over the course and distance before when sixth the Roksana in the David Nicholson two years ago. She is proven at this grade though having won a similar race at Thurles back in January 2020. If she handles the return to two-and-a-half miles and also handle this track a bit better, she has every chance.

Colreevy is undefeated over the larger fences and won as she liked when handing out a dozen length beating to Mount Ida at Thurles back in January. She comes here relatively fresh and also has previous experience of the track. She was seventh to Relegate in the Champion Bumper back in 2018 and the fifth to Concertista in the Dawn Run last season. She has taken to fences like the proverbial duck to water, but there have to be doubts lingering about her ability to handle the track. Proven at this level, she is my preferred selection of the more fancies Mullins pair.

Shattered Love is a previous Cheltenham Festival winner and won the JLT for Gordon Elliott back in 2018. She seems to have been on the back-foot ever since and her only subsequent successes have come in four runner fields. She just doesn’t seem to have the same zest for the game that she once did and that can perhaps be expected from a ten-year-old. There are younger and more hungry mares going to line up against her, so she looks set to be up against it.

Magic Of Light unfortunately shares the same traits with Annie Mc in that she operates well on a flatter track. Wins at Newbury and Ascot as well as a high profile second to Tiger Roll in a Grand National back that theory up. She has never won a chase at this level and whilst likely to give it her all, that will probably not be enough to score here.

Salsaretta has not looked the same mare since coming to grief at Punchestown last November won by Daly Tiger. Her most recent outing came at Fairyhouse in January and she trailed home last of the five runners in a race won by Agusta Gold. She is surely better than that and she is proven at this level having won a Grade Two chase at Limerick this time last year. If there was to be a surprise she may well provide it, but you really would need to be sure she is back and bouncing before backing her.

Zambella has won three listed races already this season but has it all to do to reverse recent Warwick form with Annie Mc. She may have endured one race too many this season and ultimately she looks well out of her depth at this level. Nigel Twiston-Davies has done well with her but she would need to make improvement beyond all recognition to land this on current evidence.

Shattered Love has her work cut out to reverse her February form with Elimay but they have an extra half mile to play with here and connections will strongly fancy their chances of doing so. Shattered Love is a previous winner here at Cheltenham having won the JLT Here three years ago. She is also proven on a quicker surface, so drying ground ought to suit. Elimay also has no prior experience at Cheltenham and that might just count against her
