2019 Dawn Run Mares’ Novice Hurdle Preview
The newest race at the Festival is the Mares’ Novice Hurdle which was established in 2016, I’m not sure you can produce trends for such a short period but the fact remains that all three winners have been 5yo’s trained by Willie Mullins.
Those three results have told us what standard you need to win this race and last year’s winner Laurina is testament to that as she is being aimed at the Champion Hurdle just twelve months on.
So we have established that anything from the Mullins yard is worth a second look, to be fair he doesn’t seem to have a superstar this season but he does have no less than 7 runners!
Sancta Simona is probably the best of those, owned by J.P.McManus she won her first two starts over hurdles including a Grade 3 contest at Down Royal in November. She reappeared at Leopardstown at the Christmas meeting and was a second to Aramon in a Grade 1, she was well beaten that day but the winner has since ran well in a better race.
Ruby Walsh rides My Sister Sarah who has won twice this season from three starts. Last time out she won ar Fairyhouse and although she is still learning she has plenty of scope and could go well.
The green and gold hoops are also carried by Epatante who looks to be the main English hope. Trained by Nicky Henderson, she bolted up at Kempton on her UK debut in November when slamming the opposition in terrific style.
She came with a big reputation having won a Grade 1 bumper in France back in 2017 and hadn’t been on a racecourse since. She can only improve and looks the one to beat.
Henderson also has Elusive Belle in the line-up, she was bought out of Peter Fahey’s yard by the Waley-Cohen’s at the end of last year and made a very good impression on her debut at Wincanton in January.
The 5yo travelled well and ended up trouncing the opposition, she came home clear by 19 lengths and looks a very exciting prospect indeed.
The third Henderson runner is Lust For Glory, she has won three races this season, including one victory over Posh Trish at Newbury in November. The runner up that day got her own back next time but there is not much between the two.
Paul Nicholls has a useful mare in Posh Trish, she has been kept busy and started her hurdling career back in October at Chepstow. She won by 4 lengths that day and looked a useful recruit to the hurdling ranks.
She was surprisingly beaten next time out at Newbury but has since won three races showing improved form. The last of those victories was in Listed company so is entitled to have a go here.
Gordon Elliott has only one horse entered in this race and that is Black Tears, he has always thought a lot of her and she was a good second in the Punchestown Mares Flat Race in April.
She has been a heavily backed favourite in both of her starts over hurdles so far and has yet to win. She needed the run on her debut but was then beaten fair and square next time out at Down Royal. She will need to start producing the goods she has promised to win this contest.
Henry de Bromhead has a useful mare in Sinoria, the 6yo will be ridden by Racheal Blackmore who was on board for her last victory at Punchestown last minth. She beat he useful Chosen Mate that day over two miles and this test should be right up her street.
