Champion Bumper Tips - 5:30pm Cheltenham

2019 Champion Bumper Preview

The only flat race at the Cheltenham Festival is the Champion Bumper, it’s run over 2 miles on the old course and takes place on the second day.

The bumper used to be an Irish benefit and to some extent it still is, they have won the race 13 times since the year 2000 and five of the last seven renewals. Champion Irish trainer Willie Mullins has won it 9 times and had numerous placed horses.

In 2018 Mullins had the 1-2-3 so its vital to check out any runners from that yard and it’s interesting that it’s not always the most fancied runner that proves the best. Last year Relegate won the race at 25/1 and Briar Hill also won at that price back in 2013 finishing in front of some well fancied stable mates.

The yard’s Blue Sari is a leading contender this time around, the 4yo won by an impressive 11 lengths on his debut at Gowran Park at the end of January and went straight to head of the pecking order at Closutton.

The Gordon Elliott team’s sole success in this race was with the ill-fated Fayonagh in 2017. This time round they look strong even without the highly regarded Mrs Malone who misses the race through injury.

Top of the list is Envoi Allen who is owned by the Chevelely Park Stud, the 5yo won his point by 10 lengths when trained by Colin Bowe. He was quickly purchased and moved to Gordon Elliott’s yard.

He made his bumper debut at Fairyhouse where he easily landed the odds under Jamie Codd. Two weeks later he won a Listed contest at Navan by 4 ½ lengths and then landed the hat-trick when landing a Grade 2 race at the Dublin Festival in February.

He finished in front of two well regarded Joseph O’Brien horses that day so the forms looks absolutely rock solid and will take all the beating here. The first of those was a horse called Meticulous, he had won on his debut at Killarney but was then only 4th when fancied at Leopardstown next time out. He has obviously bounced back to form and is owned by Michael Tabor.

The other O’Brien runner was Embittered. He was beaten 3 lengths behind Envoi Allen having been held up out the back, he stayed on well and the Cheltenham hill may be to his favour. One unlucky horse from that race was Abacadabras, another Elliott horse, he was travelling well with two furlongs to run when he was squeezed for room and ran out through the rails. He would have been fairly close up without that mishap and will be interesting to see how he gets on.

Sempo is the mount of Derek O'Connor and comes into the reckoning after winning his last race by 15 lengths at Thurles. He looks to be an improving sort and could go well at a decent price.

The English challenge is led by Ask For Glory trained by Paul Nicholls. He won a point to point race in May and then bolted up on his bumper debut at Chepstow at the end of December. He definitely looks above average on what we have seen so far.

Nicholls also saddles Flic Ou Voyou who has won his last two starts and will be ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies. Both of his victories have come at Wincanton and has yet to be extended. He could be anything and worth watching in the market.

The Glancing Queen represents Alan King, she was a winner over C/D in November and then ran well to be third next time out at Ascot. That form looks pretty good so has to be respected here.

The 4yo Cascova trained by Martin Meade is worth a second look. He won at Huntingdon on his debut in November and then next time out was well backed to win a Listed race here at Cheltenham. He was beaten by Glory And Fortune that day but it was still a decent effort and could improve now stepped up in trip.
