2019 Brown Advisory Handicap Chase Preview
Originally called the Mildmay Of Flete Challenge Cup, this race has been run every year since 1951 and takes place on the third day of the Festival.
It’s not a great race for the punters and of all the races at the meeting this particular race throws up more surprise results than any other. We have had winners at 66/1, 50/1, 33/1 and 25/1 recently.
The Irish raiders have won the last three renewals after having gone on a losing run which dates back to 1982.
The Storyteller came home in front for trainer Gordon Elliott last year and will be sure to have one aimed at the prize once again.
One of the best trials for this race was here at Cheltenham over course and distance in January when trainer Nick Williams horse Siruh Du Lac won a thrilling finish with Janika by a head.
It was the third win on the spin this season for Siruh Du Lac who has now improved 18lbs in total and his overall tally is five from seven over fences.
The runner up Janika was raised 6lbs which puts him on 156 and a difficult task in handicaps from now on. Trainer Nicky Henderson thinks a lot of this 6yo and not surprisingly thinks he will gain revenge on the winner that day. Henderson laso saddles River Wylde and the 8yo will be ridden by Nico de Boinville. He's been difficult to train and has only had one race this season where he fell at the last when looking the likely winner at Haydock. he's had another break since and if he's 100% he would have to be considered.
Siruh Du Lac won at Exeter in December and the horse back in 6th that day was Eamon An Cnoic trained by David Pipe.
Since then the 8yo has come out and won over two miles at Chepstow, beating the useful Capeland in the process. He’s been raised 7lbs for that but he could go well here for a yard in decent nick.
Dan Skelton more often than not has his horses spot on for the big occasion and he saddles Spiritofthegames who has done well in his first season over fences.
He was 5th in the County Hurdle last season but a longer trip and a fence was always going to see more from him and has ran well in his three starts over the bigger obstacles to date.
He got off the mark here back in October and then was a touch disappointing when last of four behind La Bague Au Roi.
Last time out he showed a bit more when third to Kildisart over course and distance and I think he could get involved off his current mark.
Venetia Williams won this with Something Wells in 2009 and Carrickboy in 2013, this time round she has a couple of runners in Gardefort and the lightly weighted Didero Vallis.
Didero Vallis is only a 6yo and has won two of his four chases to date. He won both races in soft ground so anymore rain would be a bonus for him. He's improving and could go well a decent price.
With the Irish winning the last three we need to see what they have to offer this time round. Willie Mullins has an interesting runner in Polidam. The 10yo has only had two starts this season, both in big handicaps but neither were that inspring if i'm honest. He was 9th in the Topham last year and maybe going back there next month but looks fairly handicapped on his best form.
Valseur Lido is the othe Irish raider with a chance, trained by Henry de Bromhead this once useful chaser has slipped right down the handicap of late and if he can reproduce anything like his old form he would go very close in this line up. Last time out he was 3rd to Rathvinden at Fairyhouse which was a bit more like it after some poor efforts prior to that.
