Known generally as the Festival Plate this race is open to horses aged 5 and over and is a Grade 3 contest. It is run over 2m5f and is a handicap chase that may end up losing some of its runners to the new 2m5f novice chase. Prominent trainers in this race have been Venetia Williams with 3 winners and Nicky Henderson with two in recent years.
This has been a notoriously competetive race over the years and big priced winners are common, a trend yet again backed up in 2013 when 50/1 shot Carrickboy crossed the winning line in front and in 2015 Dana won at 33/1. David Pipe won the race for the third time in 6 years when Ballynagour was successful in 2014. In 2016 the Irish had a rare success in the race when Empire Of Dirt obliged for trainer Colm Murphy.
