Champions League Betting: Real Madrid now 5/2 favourites after controversial last 16 win over Man Utd
Real Madrid are now the 5/2 favourites with Paddy Power to win the Champions League after the saw off Manchester United in a controversial last 16 tie on Tuesday night. Madrid went into the second leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday knowing they had to score after drawing the first leg 1-1 and nothing really changed when United opened the scoring in the second leg thanks to a Sergio Ramos own goal shortly after half time.
The game did change a few minutes later though when Nani was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Alvaro Arbeloa, a decision which had Sir Alex Ferguson in disbelief. It didn’t take Real Madrid long to take advantage of their extra man as Luka Modric levelled the tie on the night and on aggregate with a fierce shot from the edge of the area before former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo struck three minutes later to send Madrid into the quarter finals.
Real Madrid weren’t the only winners in the Champions League on Tuesday though. Borussia Dortmund when into the second leg of their tie against Shakhtar Donetsk 2-2 after the first leg in the Ukraine but they rammed home their advantage emphatically in Germany, winning the second leg 3-0 with Mario Gotze among the scorers. The German champions are now no bigger than 6/1 with Bet365 to win the tournament.
On Wednesday night the two sides who had leads from their first legs – Juventus and PSG – both maintained their advantage to come through unscathed. Juventus won their second leg against Celtic 2-0 for a 5-0 aggregate win while PSG were held 1-1 by Valencia in the second leg but won 3-2 on aggregate. Juventus are no bigger than 10/1 with Coral to win this tournament now while PSG are general 16/1 shots.
