Prix Du Jockey Club Betting: Godolphin to celebrate a Group 1 win with Saint Baudolino at Chantilly

Chantilly 3.15pm – Prix Du Jockey Club – 1m2f110yds – Group 1

The French Derby is the highlight of Sunday’s racing and it is run over just over 10f instead of the 12f at Epsom for the English Derby. Yesterday’s Derby could have an impact on the market here with Camelot pulling clear and giving the form of French Fifteen a very timely boost as that attempts to go one place better than Newmarket and take the French equivalent here today. French Fifteen is currently a warm order at 5-1 with Stan James.

The race has attracted 20 runners and that will have a significant impact on the draw. You really need a low draw here and history shows that the winner usually comes from a low stall and usually races prominently. French Fifteen is drawn in stall 13 and will need to ensure a smooth passage through the field if swooping late as it did at Newmarket with Camelot. It also goes up against an O’Brien runner again but this time it is Imperial Monarch.

Imperial Monarch is drawn 9 and has young Joseph O’Brien on board. It is around 7-1 in the betting at the moment but Aidan O’Brien does not have a great record in this race and it usually goes to French trained horses. It won over 10f at Sandown but that form took a knock yesterday when Thought Worthy was well beaten at Epsom. It’s impossible to ignore the boys from Ballydoyle when they are cleaning up in group races but I’m passing this one over today.

Ektihaam ran a fine race when 2nd to Bonfire but that horse failed to spark yesterday at Epsom. It did get a form boost earlier in the card at Epsom when Wrotham Heath won for Tom Queally but that was only a handicap and that rival is only rated 90. Ektihaam previously beat Wrotham Heath by 5 lengths. It is drawn in stall 2 so has every chance from the draw if it is good enough.

Kesampour is drawn in stall 5 and wears the famous green and red silks of HRH The Aga Khan. It remains unbeaten from 4 starts but only just beat Albion last time out by a head. Albion is an 18-1 chance today that often finds one too good and has Dettori on board. Kesampour also beat Top Trip previously but that one is a 20-1 chance today but is consistent. Kesampour was also entered at Epsom but decided to go here and will probably be more suited to this trip and course.

I believe Godolphin could be up and running with a Group 1 winner today but it won’t be under Dettori, De Sousa or Barzalona. Saint Baudolino will be wearing the famous all blue silks of Godolphin and will be ridden by Maxime Guyon from stall 3. It has won its last 2 races and managed to get up on the line despite not having the clearest of passages last time out and that was here at Chantilly.

It looked to have a decent turn of foot that day and although the winning margin to Sofast was only a short neck that was because it had to barge its way through to win the race late on. It has also won over 10f and races prominently and from stall 3 has no excuses and should be able to drop in behind the front runners. I believe it represents value and the overnight odds of 10-1 have soon become 7-1 so the positive support is another plus.

Most Improved sees Kieren Fallon ride for Brian Meehan but the 10-1 loos way too short based on what it has achieved so far. It has yet to win over a mile, has only ever won a maiden race and now returns to the track after 239 days when most winners of this race have had a couple of prep runs for fitness. The 3rd to Parish Hall last season reads well with Ektihaam and Power franking form since but I can’t fancy it today.

I like Andre Fabre as a trainer and Maxime Guyon as a jockey and feel the horse has a turn of foot that can be used from a prominent position late on but I fear this is the year when Aidan O'Brien finally cleans up the group races and classics. His record in this race is 0 from 23 but it seems quite telling that this horse opted for this race rather than going to Epsom.
