AT&T National Betting: Nick Watney in good position to claim second win of 2011
After shooting a course record 62 in the third round on Saturday Nick Watney will take a share of the lead into the final round of the AT&T National at Aronimink on Sunday. He shares the lead with Ryder Cup player Rickie Fowler who is aiming for his maiden PGA Tour win. The duo are tied on none under par and are one shot clear of former winner of this event and Players champion KJ Choi. A group of three are on seven under led by Adam Scott.
Watney is now a 5/2 favourite to win the tournament from here which is fair enough considering he has form on the course having finished 7th last year. That price is with William Hill among others. Rickie Fowler is a firm second favourite at 100/30 with Sportingbet while KJ Choi is the third favourite. He’s a 9/2 shot with Boylesports while Adam Scott is a 12/1 pick with Bet365 to overcome his two shot deficit.
The final round is being played out in three balls which I never like in terms of betting as the odds are quite cramped and the players generally all start on different scores making momentum and tactics hard to judge. Added to that the prices tend to be fairly cramped and final round three balls just aren’t for me.
So with pre-tournament pick Ryan Moore out with the washing here I’m going to focus on the outright market. With the market being a quarter the odds and first three for each way bets there is a lot of mileage in backing Adam Scott who seems to be enjoying a much better year in 2011 but I like Nick Watney as a frontrunner. When he won the WGC Cadillac earlier in the season he shot an excellent final round and given that he enjoys this course I see no reason why he won’t do the same on Sunday, especially as he’s just broken the course record. There are some good players chasing Watney but he’s in good enough form to see this one through.
Back N.Watney to win AT&T National for a 3/10 stake at 3.50 with William Hill
