Women's Long Jump Betting: Elena Sokolova has the form to cause an upset in the long jump final
There are a number of finals in the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday night as the Olympic Athletics meeting continues and one of those finals is the women’s long jump final. This is always a keenly contested final with the best jumpers in the world in action. American Brittany Reese has been the standard bearer this year and she goes into the final as the 7/5 favourite with Betfred.
Reese has jumped over 7m on three occasions outdoors this year and you get the feeling this final may well be won with a jump of over 7m despite qualifying being quite poor and despite Reese winning the world title with a jump of just 6.82m last year in Deagu. Reese is probably the rightful favourite as when she gets it right she really does get it right but although she qualified for this event she didn’t qualify automatically.
Great Britain will be hopeful of a good show from their representative in this final. That comes in the form of American-cum-Briton Shara Proctor who had the longest jump in qualifying and qualified at her first attempt. She has been performing well all year and has won a Diamond League meeting but she hasn’t yet jumped 7m in her career. Reese’s American compatriot Janay Deloach has been over 7m this year and will be a threat.
Two Russians have also been over 7m outdoors this year and they are Anna Nazarova and Elena Sokolova and I think there could be some value in the latter. Sokolova won the latest Diamond League event in this discipline and had Proctor, Deloach and the current European champion Eloyse Lesueur all behind her. She was one of four ladies to qualify for this final automatically and did so in just her second jump so the Russian appears to be jumping very well and at 10/1 looks good value in what could be a high quality long jump final.
