Women's 1500m Betting: Abeba Aregawi can justify favouritism in the Women's 1500m
Eight years ago in Athens, Dame Kelly Holmes gave British athletics one of its greatest ever moments when she won the Women’s Olympic 1500m and Holmes is sure to have one eye on the event when it gets underway in the Olympic Stadium on Monday morning. Great British hopes rest with Lisa Dobriskey, Hannah England and Laura Weightman but it is Abeba Aregawi of Ethiopia who is the 3/1 favourite for success with Ladbrokes.
Hannah England was the silver medallist in the World Championship last year and would represent Britain’s greatest medal hope in this competition I would say but she hasn’t really been in much form all year with injuries biting hard throughout the year. Laura Weightman will be competing in her first Olympics and I’m sure she’ll just be looking to run a good race while Lisa Dobriskey doesn’t look in the form which saw her win silver in Berlin in 2009.
I think this event will be dominated by the Africans and the Russians. Jennifer Simpson of the USA is the current world champion but she has only managed a season’s best of 4.05.17 this year so she is nowhere near the form that saw her crowned World Champion in Daegu last year. Leading the Russian charge on times this season is Ekaterina Kostetskaya who won the Russian trials and who has stepped up in distance.
I actually think Aregawi is a worthy favourite in this competition. She’s the fastest in the field this year and has three of the six fastest times recorded this year which makes her a consistent danger. This event will be a clash between the Africans and the Russians but I just fancy the Africans to head the Russians and I believe it will be Aregawi who goes away in the home straight to secure gold for Ethiopia.
Back A.Aregawi to win Women’s 1500m for a 2/10 stake at 4.00 with Ladbrokes
