Vintage Stakes Betting Guide
Vintage Stakes (Group 2) (7f)
The Vintage Stakes hasn’t been around as long as some of the other races here at Goodwood, it was introduced in 1975 and was given its Group 2 status in 1986. The race is for two year olds and therefore is a glimpse at next year’s potential classic horses, and if we glance down at the previous winners it includes Sir Percy who went on to win the Derby.
The trip of 7 furlongs will be relatively new for a lot of these youngsters and many will have only seen a racetrack a few times, in fact all of the recent winners hadn’t ran more than three times in their career so it’s very much a case of looking for progressive types and stamina in their pedigrees.
All but three of the last fifteen winners had won last time out and they had ran within a month of this race so we should be able to spot the type of horse that fits the profile of a Vintage Stakes winner.
Favourites have had a good time of it in this race, seven have won in the last seventeen years and the second favourite has won five times also so a race to concentrate on the form horses. No real surprises have been seen and the last double figure winner was back in 2002 when Dublin won at 11/1.
Richard Hannon has won the last three renewals, but he is regarded as a maestro when it comes to two year olds. David Loder recorded back-to-back wins in 2001 and 2002, as did Mark Johnston in 2003 and 2004.
