True South Classic Betting: A return to Annandale could spark DJ Trahan back into form
Away from the Open Championship there is a PGA Tour event going on this week as the True South Classic for those who weren’t lucky enough to make it into the field at Royal Lytham & St Annes. It obviously isn’t the strongest field you’ll ever see in a PGA Tour event but there is still a first prize of $540k up for grabs. Chris Kirk is the defending champion this week.
Annandale Golf Club is the venue for the tournament this week as it always is the week of The Open. The course itself is quite easy to play. In fact it ranked as the easier par 72 on the PGA Tour last season. A lot of the reason for that is that it measures less than 7000 yards so is at the mercy of the big hitters. Low scoring is expected with weather conditions favourable to attacking golf.
Zimbabwe born Brendon de Jonge is the leader in the market this week. He is 12/1 with Betfred among others. The rest of the market leaders are all pretty much unknowns in terms of household names but in a field lacking depth they could all easily be competitive. Ken Duke is the second favourite with Blake Adams and Bud Cauley also high up in the list of best odds.
It’s never easy to pick the winner of this tournament as motivation is always questionable and the first prize unlikely to get you into too many end of season events. However it is a tournament in its own right and one man who has a good record in it, even if his form this season is poor, is DJ Trahan. Usually I like a bit of form coming into a tournament on my side but with the lack of star quality in this field I’m prepared to let that go this week. Trahan won this tournament in 2006 and he has been in the top 10 in each of the last two years so Annandale is very much a course he seems to relish playing and despite his poor form in 2012 he could be worth a touch at 66/1 in case a familiar course lights a touch paper.
