Tercentenary Stakes Betting Guide
Tercentenary Stakes (Listed) (1m2f)
The Tercentenary Stakes is a relatively new race in its present guise; it has been called the Hampton Court Stakes and the New Stakes and was run on the Saturday which wasn’t part of the Royal Ascot festival until it was extended into a five day meeting as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations back in 2002.
The race is for three year olds and being a listed race doesn’t attract the top notch horses but rather those that either have failed in the big trial races or those that are first season horses progressing up the ladder and moving on to better things later in the year. Although the race is open to fillies not many have entered and more importantly none of them have won the race.
Aidan O’Brien has won the race a couple of times for Ireland and he’s always worth following in these middle distance races. On the whole the top Newmarket based trainers have a good record and Luca Cumani was responsible for the 2010 winner, Afsare. He was a typical type having only his fourth race of his career and hadn’t seen the racecourse the previous season as a two year old.
Other trends show that races like the Dante at York and other Classic trials where a horse has disappointed are often re-routed to the Tercentenary Stakes once their sights are lowered by connections, a sort of consolation prize if you like, but the month of May is usually full of clues.
2012 saw Germany notch their first ever winner at the royal meeting when Energizer thrived in the rain soften ground.
