The Stewards Cup is probably the most well known race in all five days of Glorious Goodwood. It dates back to 1840 and is a typical cavalry charge type sprint over 6 furlongs. It has gained a reputation of one of the best sprint handicaps in Europe and creates more turnover for the betting industry than any other race during the week.

It’s a notoriously difficult race to win and the draw doesn’t really help us here as over the years its swapped and changed all over the place. Middle drawn horses have had the edge in recent years but it’s always best to check how the track has been performing all week.

It goes without saying this race usually goes to the ones bang in form and on top of their game as a vast majority of past winners have either won or been placed last time out and ran within a month of this contest, the trends say that horses ran at Royal Ascot in the Wokingham Stakes have a great record here so that’s a good place to start.

Although only five favourites have won the race, plenty of winners were well backed and all but three of the last eleven winners were in the first six in the market. In 2010, Dandy Nicholls won the race for the third time and he always has multiple entries, he’s not usually far away but the trick is picking the right one, he had three in it last year and six runners in 2009!

The race is open to three year olds and above but only one three year old has won the race since 1997 and the last ten races have been dominated by 4 or 5 year olds, the experience really counts at a track like this and it’s a big ask for any youngster to dominate here.
