Day two ends with yet another filly’s race, the third of the day. This time we have a handicap over a mile for three year olds. The Sandringham Stakes was formerly known as the Fern Hill Stakes and was made a handicap race in 2005.
Quite often the race attracts those that have been beaten in the big races over longer trips, this distance is more suitable and also the silver lining of not winning those races is they get well handicapped for this event.
The 2010 winner Timepiece was a perfect example, she was touted all over the place for the Oaks but disappointed on more than one occasion and dropped back in trip here and bagged herself a nice prize. It’s worth looking for something with this type of profile for a race like this.
Decent class horses are worth following, winners in the past have been rated over 90 on many occasions so up and coming maiden winners are not the kind of horse that improves enough to win this listed event.
John Dunlop and his son Ed have a good record in the race, no coincidence that they are known for bringing their fillies on steadily and are often improve after a run or two. Michael Bell has won the race twice in the last six years and likes to line one up for this race, but he was without a runner in the 2012 race, which was won by the Irish trained Duntle.
Duntle returned at 4/1 favourite, but the jollies don’t have a great record with only three victories in the last twelve years, and in fact 5 double figure prices have won in that period so it's definitely a race for a bit of value.
