Ortiz vs Lopez Betting: Victor Ortiz's strong punches and classy work can lead to him stopping Josesito Lopez
The Sky Sports boxing team have shelled out a few quid and are bringing us the Victor Ortiz vs Josesito Lopez fight from the Staples Center in California on Saturday night. The fight is for the vacant WBC silver welterweight title and will be of interest to Britain’s Kell Brook as well as Amir Khan as both could face the winner down the line. Ortiz is an overwhelming 1/8 favourite with Skybet.
This will be ‘Vicious’ Victor Ortiz’s first fight since his controversial stoppage at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. For those who don’t remember that fight, Ortiz failed to adhere to the adage of ‘defend yourself at all times’ and was stopped in the fourth round. He was due to meet Andre Berto in a rematch in this fight but Berto failed a drugs test so he has Lopez instead. The word doing the rounds is that Ortiz has a September showdown lined up against Saul Alvarez but if he loses this fight he can wave goodbye to that.
Josesito Lopez is a game opponent for Ortiz in this fight but he’s already lost four times in his 34 fight career. The latest of those defeats though was probably a bit unfortunate when he was on the wrong end of a split decision against Jesse Vargas. I’m sure I’m not the only person who thought Lopez won that fight. He has a strong chin and can a punch but he might need to in this fight.
I think Victor Ortiz will win this fight but the big question is how will he win it. Well Lopez has never been stopped in his career but equally I doubt he’s been in with anyone who can bang like Ortiz can. Lopez’s chin is sure to be tested but I’ve got a feeling that he may well come to fight here and if he does that is surely only going to end one way. With him sparked out on the canvas. It’s by no means a certainty but with the volume of punches Ortiz throws and the power that is in them I’ll take him to be the first man to stop Lopez here.
