King George Stakes Betting Guide
King George Stakes (Group 2) (5f)
The big sprint race on the fourth day of the Goodwood meeting is the King George Stakes, promoted to a Group 2 race and has been contested since 1911. It was introduced to commemorate the coronation of King George V.
The King George is a great favourite amongst punters as it brings together so many familiar speedsters that have met time and time again over the seasons. Horses like The Tatling and Borderlescott are loved by the ordinary racegoer and both brought the house down when winning this coveted sprint title.
The race is open to three year olds and upwards and we have had our share of fillies, mares and colts coming out on top so it doesn’t favour any horse in particular although only one horse older than six has won it since the millennium.
Favourites have done alright in the race considering its competitiveness, and along with the second favourite have won the majority of renewals in the last thirteen years and in fact only one horse higher than 10/1 has triumphed in that time.
The Irish trainers won the race twice at the beginning of this century but have now gone nine years without success although to be fair they don’t have loads of runners and the two that did win were very well fancied so maybe that’s something to bear in mind whenever they do show up.
It’s a really difficult race to win and no trainer has managed to win it more than once in the last ten years.
