Jones vs Van Gerwen Betting: More confident Van Gerwen can progress to the second round in Dusseldorf
The third European Tour event of the season gets underway at the Maritim Hotel in Dusseldorf on Friday and one of the better matches on the opening day sees Michael van Gerwen taking on Wayne Jones for a place in the last 32 of the tournament. Both men will have noticed their portion of the draw has opened right up so both will be more desperate to win here. Van Gerwen is the 4/6 favourite with Blue Square.
Wayne Jones comes into the tournament as the seeded player but he hasn’t had a good season so far and as it stands won’t be in the World Matchplay in two weeks time. This is the last tournament for money to be earned towards the Matchplay so it is a big tournament for Jones who lost to Mervyn King in the last 32 of the last European Tour event in Berlin last month.
Michael van Gerwen won a Players Championship event a couple of weeks ago and he blitzed all in his path that week which he can do when he gets on a roll. That guaranteed that he will be at the World Matchplay later in the month so he comes in here without the pressure of needing money to qualify for Blackpool. He lost to Justin Pipe in the first round of the last European event in Berlin but this looks an easier draw.
Michael van Gerwen should still be full of confidence coming into this tournament whereas Wayne Jones won’t have much of that so this looks like a good opportunity for the Dutch star to move into the last 32 and probably further with the way the draw is panning out. I expect him to score too heavily for Jones and he rarely misses the sort of doubles Jones will need him to in order to stay in this match.
Back M.van Gerwen to beat W.Jones for a 4/10 stake at 1.67 with Blue Square
