Hernandez vs Cunningham Betting: Steve Cunningham can regain Cruiserweight title in Germany
It’s world title fights all the way on Box Nation on Saturday night as the new channel airs three big world title contests. The first fight of the night comes from the Fraport Arena in Germany as Yoan Pablo Hernandez puts his IBF cruiserweight title on the line against Steve Cunningham, the man he took the title from in October 2011. The Cuban is 11/10 with Paddy Power to repeat that win in this fight.
Hernandez won their first fight courtesy of a technical decision after a head clash caused a cut which halted the fight. The Cuban had Cunningham down in the first round of the bout and was comfortably ahead on two of the three cards when the fight was halted. That put Hernandez’s record up to 25 wins and just one defeat from 26 fights. 13 of those wins have come by way of stoppage with the loss to Wayne Braithwaite years ago.
The loss to Hernandez was Steve Cunningham’s third defeat in his career having been taken out earlier in his career by the likes of Tomasz Adamek in a split decision. As well as the 3 defeats, the American has also had 24 wins, 12 by knockout with his biggest win coming against Marco Huck who holds a different version of the world title now and if fighting for the world heavyweight title soon.
I think Steve Cunningham will be better prepared for this fight and I expect him to win the title back. I think he has the better pedigree of the two and although he was knocked down in the first fight that was pretty much all there was between them until the clash of heads. I don’t think it will be won inside the distance but given that the challenger is only a shade of odds on to win I’ll stick with that rather than risk the method of victory.
