Greenbrier Classic Betting: Steve Stricker's putting ability can see him right in the mix in West Virginia
The PGA Tour moves to West Virginia for the Greenbrier Classic this week and with it comes a real rarity as Tiger Woods plays for the second time in as many weeks this week. Having won the AT&T National at Congressional last week he will be looking for his 74th PGA Tour title this week. However it is Scott Stallings who will be defending the title he won in a play off last year. He is 175/1 to defend the title with Skybet.
This will be the third running of the Greenbrier Classic, a tournament which is beginning to attract a decent field after changes were made to the Old White Course at White Sulphur Springs, the venue this week, to make it a better and tougher test of golf. Tee to green the course plays well enough but it is on the greens where the action really takes place on the course which measures 7,274 yards and plays to a par of 70. Putting is everything on this golf course on tricky greens.
As you would expect when he is in the field Tiger Woods is the favourite this week. He is a top price 7/2 to win though which offers little appeal to me despite him winning last week and looking like he really is returning to his best. He still isn’t brilliant on the greens and that could hamper him this week. US Open champion Webb Simpson is next in the market at 16/1.
Whenever you need a good putter it is often folly to look any further than Steve Stricker and I’m not going to this week. Stricker is one of the best putters in the world not just the PGA Tour and gets a good roll on any of the greens. The course isn’t set up long so he’ll be able to get round with few problems and with his ability to pick up shots with the short stick I expect Stricker to go well despite not playing the event before and at 22/1 looks a solid each way call here.
