The Grand National is the biggest single race in the National Hunt calendar and attracts many people that don’t usually bet on the horses, both on course and in the bookmakers. The race itself usually takes place on one of the first Saturdays in April at Aintree racecourse and is a gruelling 4m4f race for 40 horses over 30 of the toughest, most unforgiving fences in racing. It is the race that everyone wants to bet on, old and young alike and many employers organise sweepstakes within their workplace. The testing nature of the race makes it a spectacle to watch and the amount of big priced winners gives everyone the belief that they can find a winner, whether it is through hours of form study or by picking a horse because of its name or the colour of the jockeys silks. Red Rum managed to win this race 3 times to earn legendary status and a bronze statue stands proudly at the course. This next renewal is scheduled for Saturday 5th April 2014.
