Gordon Stakes Betting Guide

Gordon Stakes (Group 3) (1m4f)

Established in 1902, The Gordon Stakes is over a mile and a half and is for three year olds, horses that ran in the Derby or at Royal Ascot take this race in and many go on to run in the final classic of the season The St Leger which is over two furlongs further so we should be looking for plenty of stamina here.  Many call this race the final classic trial for the Leger.

Conduit was the last horse to win here and follow up at Doncaster and trainer Sir Michael Stoute has won this race seven times since the early eighties. His stable Jockey Ryan Moore has ridden the winner for three of the last five years so this combination has to be respected.

It’s been a good race to punters with six favourites and four second favourites winning since 1996, the biggest priced winner for sometime was Phoenix Reach who returned at 12/1 in 2003.

Current form has been an important factor when weighing up this race, only two of the last seventeen winners won the race after being unplaced last time out. It’s a notoriously difficult race on what is a a tricky track and any horse that is not on top of their game will quickly be found out around here.
