Goodwood Cup Betting Guide
Goodwood Cup (Group 2) (2m)
The third day of Glorious Goodwood revolves around this Group 2 contest. It has taken place for over 200 years and used to be over a longer trip but was cut back to just two miles in 1991. It’s definitely one of the crowds' favourite races and has seen some tremendous racehorses lift the Cup over the years and we have been lucky in recent times to have witnessed the likes of Double Trigger who won the race three times, as well as Yeats and Persian Punch who triumphed twice each. In 2003 Persian Punch won the race at the age of ten, a remarkable feat of which we we'll be unlikely to witness again.
Regarding ages, although the race is open to three year olds it is very seldom won by one, Lucky Moon in 1990 was the last youngster to achieve that and that alone highlights how much experience is needed around this complex track.
The Goodwood Cup is part of the Stayers Triple Crown, fitting nicely between the Ascot and Doncaster races. It’s always worthwhile to note those that ran at Royal Ascot in mid June although Yeats was the last one to do the double 5 years ago many run well in both contests and then head for Donny.
Punters have had a good time over the years with as many as eleven first or second favourites winning the race in the last thirteen years or so and only Jardines Lookout returned at double figure prices since 2001. There’s no doubt the form usually works out in these specialists races at the top level.
