Glorious Goodwood Betting Guide
For over 200 years horse racing has taken place on the Sussex Downs and over that time we have seen many changes, by 1970 it was that popular and such a mainstay of the racing calendar that it was increased to a five day festival and has continued ever since and stages two of the thirty one Group One races ran in the UK each year. The Sussex Stakes and the Nassau Stakes take centre stage of the Glorious Goodwood meeting supported by many top class races throughout the last week in July.
The meeting gets under way on Tuesday 31st with the highlight being the Group 2 bet365 Lennox Stakes which is run over 7f. On the first day we also have two Group 3 races in the shape of the Gordon Stakes and the Molecomb Stakes.
On the Wednesday we traditionally kick off with a handicap over 2m5f, The Goodwood Stakes, but the second day is all about the Group 1 race The Sussex Stakes, run over a mile the race attracts the best horses in training and is the richest prize of the week. The big Group race for two year olds, The Vintage Stakes, is also part of the card.
Thursday hosts the Group 2 Richmond Stakes which is run over the 6 furlong sprint track and The Goodwood Cup which is totally the opposite and is over 2 miles and is now a Group 2 contest and attracts the best stayers from all over Europe. Such favourites as Persian Punch and Yeats have won this race in recent times.
The Friday card has two big handicaps for punters to get their teeth into but also has the Group 2 King George Stakes over 5 furlongs, and later on the Group 3 fillies race over 7 furlongs, The Oak Tree Stakes.
The final day sees the big betting event of the week The Stewards Cup, a top class sprint race that used to be run on the opening day but now has its place on the Saturday card and supports the big Group 1 fillies race The Nassau Stakes, ran over a mile and won the last twice by Midday. The race is a top target for the best females in racing throughout Europe.
