| Confederations Cup Home Page Group A - Analysis Germany, Argentina expect while Oz, Tunisia hope Group A of the FIFA Confederations Cup Germany 2005 looks likely to be a two horse race for the prestigious last four, with five FIFA World Cups™ between them, Germany and Argentina are favoured to boss Australia and Tunisia. The event, which is seen as a warm-up to Germany 2006, is due to take place between 15 and 29 June, 2005. The event is particularly important for the hosts, who do not have to go through the trying qualifying campaign and so have been left hanging on their pitiful Euro 2004. An untested coach newly installed, Jürgen Klinsmann has more to lose than anyone from the event, and looming largely in the group are powerful Olympic champions Argentina. Point to prove for Argentina The two favourites will not face off until their final group match, and José Pekerman’s side are hoping to take full points from the African and Oceanian champions in their first two contests. With world-class players the likes of Juan Roman Riquelme, Javier Saviola, Carlos Tevez, and many, many others at their disposal, all expectations are for them to do that. For the proud footballing nation, the disappointing group stage exit at the 2002 FIFA World Cup still haunts -- as does a defeat to Brazil in the final of the Copa America in 2004. With Marcelo Bielsa’s surprise resignation, the Albiceleste are wary of losing momentum in their goal of becoming just the second nation to win a FIFA World Cup outside of their own continent. Hoping to sneak through Though they are ranked 36th and 64th respectively in the October 2004 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, Tunisia and Australia are hopeful of making an impact against their more illustrious opponents. The Confederations Cup has traditionally featured a surprise package or two, and these ambitious outsiders hope to meet that historical precedent. Having reached the last two FIFA World Cups, Tunisia have a stronger pedigree than the Socceroos, and an African Cup of Nations championship at home in 2004 has the Les Aigles de Carthage flying high. However, a sluggish start to Germany 2006 qualifying will have Roger Lemerre’s nerves frayed in the trying two opening matches against Argentina and the hosts. Heading in with lesser expectations, Australia will be hard pressed to still be in with a chance to reach the prestigious last four by the time of their final match against Tunisia. Frank Farina and his Socceroos are desperate for international respect and a high profile, official tournament opener against the hosts at the first match from Frankfurt’s new Waldstadion. If the lesser lights in Group A manage to snare some points from Germany and Argentina, the final group match between those two multiple FIFA World Cup winners could be a fantastic feast of football. The home supporters in Nürnberg should be a big advantage for the slumping Mannschaft, who will be taking the test very seriously. Captain Michael Ballack will have a hefty load to carry if the once proud hosts are to reclaim FIFA World Cup glory in 2006, and the FIFA Confederations Cup provides them their only chance to demonstrate that they have the ability to conquer the world. |

Jürgen Klinsmann (Germany coach): We'll see how far the team has come by next summer. It's also vital to get the team together for a decent length of time occasionally. It's always a highlight and an honour to play a team like Argentina. It's a special moment for the players, the kind of match you never forget. We're looking forward to all our games. There are no easy opponents, and we'll approach every game with the proper amount of respect. Australia are very strong with a team mainly made up of players who earn their wages in Europe. We'll do a thorough job of checking out all our opponents, either by going to games or on video. We regard the FIFA Confederations Cup as a dress rehearsal for the FIFA World Cup a year later. Every game is a chance to grow. It's an opportunity to test ourselves in a competitive situation against top-class opposition ahead of the World Cup. We'll be properly focused on the tournament and we'll be taking it seriously. It's an opportunity to try one or two things out. We'll draw some important conclusions.
Julio Grondona (President of the Argentine Football Association and FIFA Vice-President): It was a very good draw and it has the makings of a very exciting tournament. The champions from all over the world will be there, which is why it will take a great effort for one team to prevail. My country, Argentina, will take on Germany, Australia and Tunisia, though that’s not what really matters. The bottom line is that to win a competition of this stature, you have to be able to beat anyone.
Frank Farina (Australia coach): It's very exciting. Our last opponents were the Solomon Islands and now we're taking on Germany, obviously it's a massive contrast. It's always a thrill when you take on the host nation. It's an incredibly important tournament for Oceania and especially for Australia. We don't often get the chance to play top-class nations in the context of a tournament, so it's a superb opportunity to test ourselves against the big names and prepare for next year's play-off against a South American nation for a place at the World Cup. We finished third and then second in our last two Confederations Cup appearances. Maybe we'll come first this time.
Hamouda Ben Ammar (President of the Tunisian Football Federation): We are very happy to be involved. Playing in the Confederations Cup is a treat for Tunisian football because at this level, the game is played at the very highest standard. We therefore intend to show our own fine football to the German public and to the watching world. The players are well aware that this is a big opportunity for them. One of the first things we said to each other after winning the CAN last February was ‘Great - that’s our place booked at the Confederations Cup.’ For the players, facing Germany and Argentina is going to be very special. And at such a widely covered event, it’s also a chance to put themselves in the shop window. I just got off the phone to Roger Lemerre. There is no such thing as an easy draw, particularly at this level, but the so-called “little teams” sometimes go a long way, as has recently been the case. And since some of the finest exploits in the Confederations Cup have been by African teams, we can afford to be optimistic. At the moment, we are also playing for our place at the World Cup, which is very important to us. It’s not going as well as we would have liked, because we’ve let some points slip at crucial moments as we did in Malawi (2-2). But the gap between us and Morocco (two points) and Guinea (three points) remains bridgeable. We believe nothing is yet decided as we’ll be playing host to them in the return legs. So we’re optimistic about achieving our main aim of coming back to Germany not just next year but in two years time as well.

| Group B - Analysis Group B looks finely balanced Containing the Champions of the World and South America (Brazil), Europe (Greece), Asia (Japan) and North, Central America and the Caribbean (Mexico), Group B of the FIFA Confederations Cup Germany 2005 appears too close to call. The battle for the top two places to secure a semi-final berth is sure to be fierce. The draw for the FIFA Confederations Cup Germany 2005 has presented football-lovers with two evenly balanced groups, with Group B holding particular allure due to the presence of four of the top 20 teams. Brazil (1st) and Japan (19th) sandwich Mexico(10th) and Greece (16th) in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, and all will no doubt be keen to show they are there on merit. While Brazil – who scarcely need any introduction – are undeniably hot favourites for the first qualifying position, the other three teams seem more or less on a par. The dark horses remain Otto Rehhagel’s Greek side, who despite becoming Champions of Europe in Portugal this summer, have never beaten any of their opponents in this group. It is therefore difficult to hazard a prediction for Charisteas and Co., but the Werder Bremen striker will surely be aiming to shine in front of the German public. Brazil in no mood for an upset Winners of the 7th edition of the Gold Cup in July 2003, Mexico appear a likely contender for semi-final qualification, not least because they are the only ones to have beaten the Brazilian giants. In 20 meetings, the Tricolores have clocked up no less than five victories over the Auriverdes, along with eleven defeats and four draws. Their record against the Seleçaostands in stark contrast to that of Japan, who have failed to even draw in six encounters. Already through to the next phase of the Asian Zone qualifiers for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, the Japanese continue to rule the roost in the AFC. Since the start of the year, Zico’s charges have also started to produce some impressive performances further afield against strong opposition. They suffered narrow defeats in the Czech Republic (0-1), Serbia and Montenegro (0-1), and also Argentina (1-2), and held England to a draw (1-1) in Manchester last June. It seems likely therefore that the fight for the second semi-final qualifying place extremely tight between Greece, Mexico and Japan. The South American and World Champions, however, are not immune to an upset - as was the case at France 2003. Outstripped by Cameroon and Turkey, Ronaldinho, Adriano et al went out of the tournament in the first round. But with one year to go before the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, the Auriverdes will be looking to show all pretenders that they aim to hang on to their throne. |

Jean-Pierre Frankenhuis (Brazilian Football Federation European Coordinator) We are always happy to take part in these big international tournaments. I’ve called Brazil to pass on the result of the draw but today is a public holiday, so there will be further reaction from home over the next few days. Zico is a friend of mine, but we’ll be doing him no favours in the match against Japan. We take this competition very seriously, but the fact that it’s taking place in the same country as the World Cup 12 months before the big event makes it even more important. We’ll be coming with a strong side because the Brazilian league will have finished and the clubs will not be asking us to leave out their players.
Otto Rehhagel (Greece coach): The European Championship showed just how many Greeks there are around the world, it's not something I knew before. We received feedback from all over the globe. I reckon we're in a very tough group. I'm a great fan of Brazilian football, but I've never coached a side against Brazil. We'll go out and enjoy ourselves. Brazil are the gold standard in the footballing world. It's a pleasure to witness Ronaldinho, for example, just watching how inventive and original he can be. The game in Leipzig is a highlight for us. I'm looking forward to the games in Frankfurt against a good Mexico side who've already beaten Brazil, and against a hard running, committed Japan. We have a huge fan base in Germany and obviously they'll want us to win both games. Our motto is 'nothing is impossible.' As my assistant Ioannis says: “We'll draw with Brazil and beat the other two.”
Zico (Japan coach): We are in a very difficult group, but in this competition they are all big teams. All of them have won important competitions: Brazil have won five World Cups, Germany three, Argentina two… But we have plenty of time to prepare ourselves. Japan are getting ready to play in their third consecutive Confederations Cup. We will try to have a good tournament, but in the meantime, we have the ongoing World Cup qualifying campaign to think about.
Ricardo Alberto Martinez Saenz (Administrative Director of the Mexican Football Federation): All of the teams will be coming to Germany to win. That includes us, as we did in 1999, at home in Mexico. In 2005, Mexico will bring its best players at the time and will field the strongest team our coach has available to him. The Confederations Cup will give us invaluable experience on the road to the World Cup in Germany the following year, in which we hope to take part, of course.

| I notice there is no Hernan Crespo or Seba Veron in the Argie squad, I don't think they're injured. Is this a sign that Argentina are taking this less seriously than Brazil. Crespo, scored 2 in their 3-1 win last week. The Brazil team in first choice, with all the big names. |

| Crespo is rested(not sure for what) and Veron was never picked since Pekerman took over as coach of Argentina. Roberto Ayala(rested), Roberto Abbondanzieri, Luis Gonzalez and Javier Mascherano are out as their clubs are involved in the Libertadores Cup. It is still a strong lineup I feel. |

| The reason may be the Argies coach prefers other types of forwards - Tevez and Saviola for example can both handle the ball well, while Crespo is the kind who wanders in front of goal and tries to find the best position for shooting. The Argies squad still looks quite strong, as Rashin has said. Brazil looks the strongest though. |

| I will like to clarified a thing or two. First: Mexico yes has beaten Brazil sometimes, but like in Confederations Cup 1999 Brazil team was not the strongest off all, when Mexico has been able to beat Brazil it was when Brazil take sub-20 team and Mexico Major National Team. Just to take into account, last time they meet in America Cup 2004, Mexico lost 0-4 to Brazil in Piura Peru. And these time it was Brazil Major National Team vs Mexico National Team. Now against Greece and Japan, Mexico could win, but is not certain, Japan is already classified to the World Cup, Mexico is near also, but Greece is far away. I expect low scoring in both matches Mexico vs Japan, and Mexico vs Grecce, taking into consideration that Greece defends very well. |

1. They are the home side. 2. They will not have any competitive games so must use this opportunity. 3. Other (qualified) sides will be sending under-strength teams (I guess) I may not be tempted to back them outright but I'd feel like I was getting a run for my money. As regards individual games I'm sure there will be value bets along they way as teams are under-rated.

| Double Argentina/Brazil(2.10) should be a good deal IMO.I really can't see any of these two sides failing in the oppening games.Argentina look like the best bet on Wednesday. They are playing some amazing football right now and even without Crespo they should have too much for mediocre Tunisia.Btw, Juan Sebastian Veron is injured. As for Germany v Australia, I'm definitely against Germany here. With the likes of Schweinsteiger and Ballack(both in top form), the hosts possess enough power to hurt any defense in the world, but their defending is quite poor these days and it's the biggest problem for Klinsmann at the moment. Some formations with Hitzlsperger at the back are such a joke(Russia punished an every single mistake a few days ago, scoring two goals, while even Northern Ireland managed to find their net ) and I really wouldn't trust them in this tournament. Also, with a little bit of luck, Slovenia could have easily scored 3-4 goals against them a couple of months ago.It was a pure luck that saved their ass then.Australia(11.00 at Betfair) is simply overpriced.Probable lineups: Germany: Kahn - Schneider, Friedrich, Mertesacker, Hitzlsperger - Frings - Deisler, Schweinsteiger - Ballack - Kuranyi, Podolski Australia: Schwarzer - Neill, Popovic, Moore, Muscat - McKain - Chipperfield, Skoko, Emerton - Cahill - Viduka Last edited by kojic2003; 13-06-2005 at 23:25. |
