Post Concaf Gold Cup

Already a thread on Mexico vs South Africa but I thought this comp deserved it's own thread. Comp is in the US this year. Defo money to be made here.

I agree that Mexico is a cracking bet to beat south africa, this match is played in Los Angeles and is effectivley a home match for Mexico.

Other first round pick for me include Costa Rica to beat Canada. Canada have been playing poorly and lost to Honduras at home last week. Only doubt I have here is that the game is played in seattle, just over the borber from canada, and they'll have a big support.

Details of the comp can be found here.

http://www.concacaf.com/view_section.asp?id=3

opening matches are prices as below.

6 Jul-23:00
Colombia v Panama1.225.0010.00
7 Jul-01:00Trinidad & Tobago v Honduras3.003.252.10
7 Jul-21:30Canada v Costa Rica3.803.251.80
7 Jul-23:30Cuba v USA12.005.501.16
8 Jul-23:00South Africa v Mexico4.503.401.66
9 Jul-01:00Guatemala v Jamaica2.803.252.20

I"d love to see Cuba defeat the USA but I can't see it.

I'm starting with a Mexico / USA double

Defo on Mexico in a single. Re Canada - footy is not followed much over there as far as I know so I doubt crowds will turn up. What's more, US and Can fans are not such a force as anywhere else, they tend not to understand the game and prefer their refreshments and small talk. Costa Rica shouldn't fear that much, imo.

Hi Deal2421,You're right the first 2 results were a shock, Columbia and Honduras were both clear favs, but neither won. sometimes you get a tourment with a lot of shocks early on. World Cup 2002 was like that, perhasp it's worth looking at some long shots, or covering draws ?

I get the point you're making Tulenos about US fans, not having much of an influence, I've been to a couple of MLS games, and they're fun but very quiet. I think the only team that is going to get a strong home advantage here is Mexico, they're playing their group matches in southern california, which has a huge football mad mexican population. When the US played Mexico in LA a few years back, it was like a home match to the mexicans. They should be nailed on to beat the RSA.

From the Offical Mexican Cup site

Mexico to defend Gold Cup title w/ tried and true

Mexico has called up eight players from its Confederations Cup squad to help defend its Gold Cup title

02/JUL/2005 -Defenders Javier Rodriguez and Carlos Salcido, and forward Alberto Medina, all from Chivas of Guadalajara, midfielders Luis Perez of Monterrey and Antonio Naelson of Toluca, will remain on the Gold Cup team that will battle for the title in seven U.S. cities starting on July 6. Goalie Jared Borgetti of Pachuca was also confirmed for the team, which includes goalie Jesus Corona, the only player who did not participate in the Confederations Cup play, and Rafael Marquez Lugo of Morelia, who saw only a few minutes of playing time in Germany.

Mexico's Argentine coach, Ricardo Lavolpe, has assembled 15 new team members for the Gold Cup, among them goalie Guillermo Ochoa of America, the youngest player on the squad at age 19, and forward Omar Bravo of Guadalajara.

Mexico had announced earlier to CONCACAF a preliminary list of 30 players, which was cut down to make the list announced by the Federation on Friday.

The Mexican team will be finalized on Monday, July 4, after several details are worked out before the squad travels to the United States for the start of the competition. Mexico will vie for the title in the group also containing South Africa, Jamaica and Guatemala.

The list presented on Friday includes:

Goalies: Guillermo Ochoa (America), Moises Muñoz (Morelia) and Jesus Corona (Tecos).

Defenders: Francisco Rodriguez (Guadalajara), Ricardo Osorio (Cruz Azul), Gonzalo Pineda (Pumas UNAM), Carlos Salcido (Guadalajara), Mario Mendez (Toluca) and Hector Altamirano (Santos).

Midfielders: Ismael Rodriguez (Monterrey), Israel Lopez (Toluca), Antonio Naelson (Toluca), Gerardo Galindo (Pumas UNAM), Rafael Garcia (Cruz Azul), Carlos Adrian Morales (Tigres) and Luis Perez (Monterrey).

Forwards: Rafael Marquez (Morelia), Daniel Osorno (Atlas), Aaron Padilla (America), Alberto Medina (Guadalajara), Juan Pablo Garcia (Atlas), Jared Borguetti (Pachuca) and Omar Bravo (Guadalajara).

Poste by a South African fella on a rugby forum I read. By the look of it SA are in one hell of a mess.

Quote:
bout SA soccer..........

Quote:

Barring an earthquake," said Bafana general manager Stanley 'Screamer' Tshabalala from London on Monday night, "the team's preparation has been hit be every conceivable obstacle. But the morale of the players remains high and we can only do our best against great odds".

From the outset, the Gold Cup has proved anything but a glittering proposition for Bafana coach Stuart Baxter, with South Africa's top overseas-based players declaring their unavailability en masse and local clubs Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, in particular, withholding permission for their players to travel to the United States in preference to the unofficial events in which they are participating.

And the suggestion by one observer that South African soccer officials might have handed Baxter a poison chalice in view of the haphazard manner in which the Concacaf Cup planning has been handled, tends to be anything but far-fetched.

also due to legal stuff it has been hard getting our squad to USA

Quote:

After a delay of 24 hours in obtaining visas because of the American Day of Independence holiday, Thabang Radebe, Peter Petersen, Phil Evans, Elrio van Heerden, Siyabonga Nomvete and Stanley Kgatla set off from Johannesburg International Airport on Tuesday night for the long haul to Los Angeles.

But Tshabalala revealed that no word had been heard from Swedish-based Thando Mngomeni on the visa issue, with the Helsenborg midfielder or striker failing to meet up with the main Bafana contingent in London

Quote:

Johannesburg - Wits University goalkeeper Wayne Roberts has "vanished" as the confusion surrounding the Bafana Bafana squad to play in the Concacaf Gold Cup tournament seem to be unabated.

Roberts has been replaced by Orlando Pirates reserve goalkeeper Thabang Radebe after failing to make contact with the Bafana camp in Johannesburg 24 hours before the squad's departure for the United States.

our best goalie is hans vonk who plays in holland for ajax, and he isn't playing.

http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=6&click_id=2823
list of stories about recent SA national soccer stuff.

i follow bafana bafana (SA soccer) it is my second fav. sport behind rugby (a big way behind). in bafana bafana squad at present time the coach is under fire (really it is a SA thing not just rugby) many of our best players are out.

team
Quote:

Goalkeepers: 1 Calvin Marlin (Supersport United); 2 Wayne Roberts (Wits University); 3 Raoul Langeveldt (FC Fortune)

Defenders : 4 Lucky Lekgwathi (Orlando Pirates); 5 Craig Bianchi (Mamelodi Sundowns); 6 Ricardo Katza (Supersport United); 7 Pa Gaxa (Supersport United); 8 Lucas Thwala (Orlando Pirates); 9 Phil Evans (Supersport United); 10 Pete Peterson (Moroka Swallows)

Midfielders : 11 Stanley Kgatla (Silver Stars); 12 Siyabonga Siphika (Manning Rangers); 13 Reagan Noble(Wits University);

14 Gift Leremi (Orlando Pirates); 15 Bongani Nkosi (Bloemfontein Celtics); 16 Hleza Mofedi (Orlando Pirates); 17 Abram Raselemane (Supersport United); 18 Elrio van Heerden (FC Copenhagen --

Denmark); 19 Thando Mngomeni (Helsingborg N Sweden); 20 Daine Klate (Supersport United)

Strikers: 21 Siyabonga Nomvete (Empoli N Italy); 22 Lebohang Mokoena (Orlando Pirates); 23 Lungisani Ndlela (Supersport United)

not many of our players over seas carnell, fortune (manchester united), zuma etc in this side.

our defence and goalkeepers seem weak i'm worried Orlando Pirates reserve goalkeeper Thabang Radebe will get game time (dout he will), midfield a bit stronger our strikers=strongest part of this side.

Siyabonga Nomvete = total fecking legend

only know SA soccer, no nothing about Mexico, but mexico seem a very good bet, although don't take it for granted and bet more than you would want to lose etc.

SA just like in rugby will not give up and will fight to the end and thats all i expect of this side as it is mostly young and the guys who play psl (SA comp.).

how good is this mexico side?

So following this info I think Mexico is favorit. Maybe in double with USA odds around 1.9 - I'll try with medium stake.

Well, Mexico are rightly favs and I'm happy to be on them @ 1.9 with my local book but anyone going to jump on the banwagon too late should think twice as the opening price on the net was 1.67 and now is mostly down to 1.5 or even 1.44. In this case, any value is gone and it may be worth considering the over bet instead. Don't think the Mexicans won't win, but @ such low odds it's up to everyone.

I'll say Mexico is as sure to win as it can get and will go with Costa Rica too.
Yuck, Canadians and football.

Welcome amirbc - as said above, Costa Rica should win - not sure if that easily, but should win. Mexico @ 1.6 + looks a great bet, but not below, especially below 1/2.

With the first day gone with unexpected results, we should be wary of the Canada v Costa Rica match. Canada aren't all that bad despite what people say.

I'm tempted to go for Costa Rica, but will the unexpected happen again?

Well done to everyone that had Costa Rica.

USA manged to beat 10 man Cuba 4-1, but it doesn't sound a convincing win, it was 1-1 into the 88th minute.

Not sure what that says about each team, doesn't say much for the americans imho, reflects well on Cuba, but they would always try and raise their game for what is the biggest game of the year for them.

I think most of us are on Mexico tonight, good luck to everyone

Just checked the prices on the Mexico vs RSA game, Mexico are now down to 1.4, looks like there is some money hitting this book. I have Mexico a couple of days ago at 1.66, which I think is fair value. I agree with Tulenos, I'd not take them at this price, I'm pretty sure they'll win. but I'm not sure it's still value

Not much to add on the Mexico match, just fingers crossed and hope everyone got a better price than is available right now. In fact, like Foolosgold99, I wouldn't take them @ this price at all. But I'm also not hedging, although one hell of an arbing opportunity opened up (thanks to genrosity of our local books it spells like a huge arb, but letting it ride). Not checked today, but if anyone wants to boost the odds safely, why not take Mexico -1 AH @ 1.76 @ Pinnacle - last night - the trick is if they win by one you get your money back and if they win by 2+ you collect. Not better value than straight win, but a safe way of boosting the odds in case you believe they will destroy SA. Just a thought.

mexico ht/ft at evens is what i'm on
got on the straight win too late
slipped to 1.45 now
i think Mexico are due to produce a bit of flash football and some goals ..a weak SA sounds like a good side to start bashing some goals past
come on Borgetti
