Want your own rating system ?

There's quite a few rating systems about for horse racing such as Massey or Racing Post or some of the subscription based sites or software. But i rarely see people using a rating system of their own.

I'm going to assume for a moment that the reason for this is that using a rating system manually is simply too time consuming to be practical. If however it would be easy more people would have a go at it.


I've now got myself a horse racing database that i've created myself and that i maintain as a web application. I could potentially create a rating system on this and publish that as a webpage. And with a bit more work i could even have a go at backtesting. ( in fact i plan on doing this for myself sometime someday )

Not making any promises just yet but.....
if there's sufficient interest from people here i might be pursuaded to bring this forward a bit.

Basically you'd need to come up with a clear plan for a rating.
I provide an application that covers all the basics and then you can "plug-in" the actual calculation of the rating. The result can be backtested for yourself. The rating for future races can be displayed on a webpage.

That's a very kind offer Datapunter and I'm amazed people aren't queuing up at your door!!! I guess some people are work adverse. That said there are some tireless campaigners on this site who deserve nothing but applause I do my own rating system from my own database and can appreciate the work involved at the beginning but once it's in motion it's great.
Now I can lose money in a very organised and systematic way where as before it was totally haphazard

To be honest i had expected a few more reactions.
Thread's been up for 5 days and only 2 "interested" reactions.
Hmmm... sorry lads, but this one is going back on the someday sometime shelf for now.
The idea will pop-up again when i get around to it.

Now I can lose money in a very organised and systematic way where as before it was totally haphazard

Might be an idea to also post this in normal ATR section, it gets more views and would probably interest a few more people. I'd be interested in it, don't like systems all that much but wouldn't mind a crack at devising one and following its results.

You mean something like Massey's customs reports but creating your own ratings and test them ?

would love to give this a go with you, i have been creating some data based on turf 2yo maidens this season - going to analyse for the whole of 2008 season and then see how effective it is when i actually rate the maidens as well as the horses.
